The range is located in an area of [ephemeral](/source/ephemeral) watercourses and stony [sandstone](/source/sandstone) ridges lightly vegetated with ''[Eucalyptus miniata](/source/Eucalyptus_miniata)'', [acacia](/source/acacia) and [spinifex](/source/Triodia_(grass)) on the ridge tops. Further down the ridges areas of [paperbark](/source/paperbark) are found.<ref name=rgsq>{{cite web|url=http://www.rgsq.org.au/19-143c|title=19°S 143°E Gregory Range – Queensland by Degrees|year=2012|accessdate=12 October 2014|publisher=Royal Geographical Society of Queensland|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141017111252/http://www.rgsq.org.au/19-143c|archive-date=17 October 2014|url-status=dead}}</ref> The range extends approximately {{convert|400|km|mi|-1}} in an east–west direction.<ref name=QP1/> The southern portion forms an undulating sandstone and [basalt](/source/basalt) plateau. The sandstone is of the [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic) age (180-160 million years) while the basalt and granite dates from the Mesoproterozoic age (1.6 - 1.0 billion years). This portion is covered in open forest of [bloodwood](/source/Corymbia), wattle, eucalypts and spear grass. The [Stawall River](/source/Stawall_River) flows south from the range and is a tributary of the [Flinders River](/source/Flinders_River).<ref name=rgsq2/>

The [Norman River](/source/Norman_River) and three of its tributaries the [Carron](/source/Carron_River_(Queensland)), [Clara](/source/Clara_River) and [Yappar River](/source/Yappar_River)s, also have their headwaters in the range. The first [European](/source/Europe) to travel through the area was the explorer [Augustus Charles Gregory](/source/Augustus_Charles_Gregory) in 1855 or 1856<ref name=rgsq2/> as part of his expedition from [Port Essington](/source/Darwin%2C_Northern_Territory) to [Brisbane](/source/Brisbane%2C_Queensland).
