# Gregg Hurwitz

**Gregg Andrew Hurwitz** (born August 12, 1973) is an American [novelist](/source/Novelist), [screenwriter](/source/Screenwriter), and [comic book writer](/source/Comic_book_writer). Most of his novels are in the [thriller](/source/Thriller_(genre)) [fiction](/source/Fiction) genre. His script writing work includes a film adaptation of his book *[Orphan X](/source/Orphan_X)*, a TV adaptation of [Joby Warrick](/source/Joby_Warrick)'s *[Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS](/source/Black_Flags:_The_Rise_of_ISIS)*,[1] and a screenplay for the 2017 film *[The Book of Henry](/source/The_Book_of_Henry)*. He also has written comic books for publishers such as [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics) and [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics).

## Early life

Hurwitz grew up in the [San Francisco Bay Area](/source/San_Francisco_Bay_Area) and graduated from [Bellarmine College Preparatory](/source/Bellarmine_College_Preparatory) in San Jose, California.[2] While completing a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree from [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) (1995) and a master's from [Trinity College, Oxford](/source/Trinity_College,_Oxford), in [Shakespearean tragedy](/source/Shakespearean_tragedy) (1996), he wrote his first novel. At Harvard, he was a student of psychologist [Jordan Peterson](/source/Jordan_Peterson), who influenced his writing.[3] He was the undergraduate scholar-athlete of the year at Harvard for pole vaulting and played college soccer in England, where he was a [Knox Fellow](/source/Frank_Knox_Memorial_Fellowship).[4]

## Career

Hurwitz is the author of *The Tower*, *Minutes to Burn*, *Do No Harm*, *The Kill Clause*, *The Program*, *Troubleshooter*, *Last Shot*, *The Crime Writer*, *Trust No One*, *Don't Look Back*, and *Orphan X*. His books have been shortlisted for best novel of the year by the [International Thriller Writers](/source/International_Thriller_Writers), nominated for the [CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger](/source/CWA_Ian_Fleming_Steel_Dagger), chosen as feature selections for four major literary book clubs, honored as [Book Sense](/source/Book_Sense) Picks, and translated into 28 languages.[citation needed]

He wrote the original screenplay for the film *[The Book of Henry](/source/The_Book_of_Henry)* (2017), directed by [Colin Trevorrow](/source/Colin_Trevorrow) for Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, and filmed in New York.[5]

His 2016 novel *Orphan X* was picked up by Warner Bros. with [Bradley Cooper](/source/Bradley_Cooper) to direct.[6] Hurwitz will write the screenplay adaptation. Hurwitz has written *[Wolverine](/source/Wolverine_(comic_book))*, *[The Punisher](/source/The_Punisher_(2004_series))*, and *[Foolkiller](/source/Foolkiller)* for [Marvel Comics](/source/Marvel_Comics),[7] and published numerous academic articles on Shakespeare. He has taught fiction writing in the [USC](/source/University_of_Southern_California) English Department, and guest lectured for [UCLA](/source/University_of_California,_Los_Angeles) and [Harvard](/source/Harvard_University). He also has written and produced season two of the TV show *[V](/source/V_(2009_TV_series))*.

He became the writer of *[Batman: The Dark Knight](/source/Batman:_The_Dark_Knight)* for [DC Comics](/source/DC_Comics) in 2012.[8][9]

## Personal life

Hurwitz lives in Los Angeles.[2] He is married and has two daughters.[10]
