'''Gregory David Anderson''' (born 1961) is an Australian [Anglican](/source/Anglican) [bishop](/source/bishop) and former musicologist who has served as the 6th [Bishop of the Northern Territory](/source/Anglican_Diocese_of_the_Northern_Territory) since 29 November 2014.<ref name="ADNT Bishop">{{cite web |title=Our bishop |url=http://www.ntanglican.org.au/bishop/ |website=Anglican Diocese of the Northern Territory |publisher=Anglican Diocese of the Northern Territory |accessdate=18 July 2020 |archive-date=26 December 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191226132602/http://www.ntanglican.org.au/bishop/ |url-status=dead }}</ref>

==Early life and parish ministry==
Anderson was born in Sydney and attended an Anglican church from birth.<ref name="TMA 2016">{{cite news |last1=Brolly |first1=Mark |title=NT bishop honours one invitation and arrives with his own |url=http://tma.melbourneanglican.org.au/outreach/Bishop-Greg-Anderson-170216 |accessdate=18 July 2020 |work=The Melbourne Anglican |publisher=Anglican Diocese of Melbourne |date=17 February 2016}}</ref>

In the early-mid 1980s Anderson studied ethnomusicology at the [University of Sydney](/source/University_of_Sydney)<ref name="MTC">{{cite web |authorlink1=Moore Theological College |title=The Rev Dr Gregory (Greg) Anderson |url=https://moore.edu.au/faculty-members/greg-anderson |website=Moore Theological College |accessdate=18 July 2020 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140316154824/https://moore.edu.au/faculty-members/greg-anderson |archivedate=16 March 2014 |url-status=dead}}</ref> with an interest in researching traditional Aboriginal songs. In 1986, he moved to the [Northern Territory](/source/Northern_Territory) for 14 months to research the songs of Central [Arnhem Land](/source/Arnhem_Land), during which time he was adopted by a [Rembarrnga](/source/Rembarrnga) clan and he worked with musicians who had become Christians through a [revival](/source/Christian_revival) on [Elcho Island](/source/Elcho_Island) in 1979.<ref name="ABC 2014">{{cite episode|series=Sunday Nights|title=Darwin's new Bishop on Cyclone Tracy's 40th anniversary|url=https://www.abc.net.au/sundaynights/stories/s4154944.htm|access-date=18 July 2020|date=25 Dec 2014|station=[ABC Local Radio](/source/ABC_Local_Radio)}}</ref> This led Anderson to study theology in order to be involved in the growth and development of the Aboriginal church.

After completing studies at [Moore Theological College](/source/Moore_Theological_College), Anderson returned to the Northern Territory with his wife and children as a missionary with the [Church Missionary Society](/source/Church_Missionary_Society) where he remained for the next 12 years. He lived at [Numbulwar](/source/Numbulwar) and later in [Darwin](/source/Darwin%2C_Northern_Territory),<ref name="TMA 2016" /> training Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander church leaders first at [Nungalinya College](/source/Nungalinya_College) (where he served as Academic Dean) and for the Diocese of the Northern Territory (where he served as Aboriginal Ministry Development Officer and an Honorary Assistant Priest at [Christ Church Cathedral, Darwin](/source/Anglican_Diocese_of_the_Northern_Territory). Anderson was ordained deacon in 2001 and priest in 2002,<ref name="MTC" /> and was the first person to be ordained by Bishop [Philip Freier](/source/Philip_Freier) (in his role at the time as Bishop of the Northern Territory).<ref name="TMA 2016" />

In 2007, Anderson and his family moved back to Sydney where he served head of the Department of Mission at [Moore Theological College](/source/Moore_Theological_College), a position he held until his appointment to the episcopate in 2014.<ref name="TMA 2016" /><ref name="MTC" />

==Episcopal ministry==
In June 2014, Anderson was elected as the sixth Bishop of the Northern Territory, replacing Bishop [Greg Thompson](/source/Greg_Thompson_(bishop)) who had been translated to the [Anglican Diocese of Newcastle](/source/Anglican_Diocese_of_Newcastle) as of 2014.<ref name="ACL 2014">{{cite news |title=Greg Anderson elected Bishop of The Northern Territory |url=http://acl.asn.au/greg-anderson-elected/ |accessdate=18 July 2020 |work=Anglican Church League |publisher=Anglican Church League |date=23 June 2014}}</ref> He was consecrated and enthroned as bishop on the eve of St Andrew's Day, on 29 November 2014.<ref name="ABC 2014" /><ref name="ADNT Bishop" />
