For the painter called Grechetto, see [Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione](/source/Giovanni_Benedetto_Castiglione).

**Grechetto** (ɡreˈketto) or **Grechetto bianco** is a white [Italian wine](/source/Italian_wine) [grape variety](/source/Grape_variety) of [Greek origins](/source/Greek_wine). The grape is planted throughout central [Italy](/source/Italy), particularly in the [Umbria](/source/Umbria) region where it is used in the *[Denominazione di origine controllata](/source/Denominazione_di_origine_controllata)* (DOC) [wine](/source/Wine) [Orvieto](/source/Orvieto_(wine)) and *[Denominazione di origine controllata](/source/Denominazione_di_origine_controllata)* (DOC) [wine](/source/Wine) [Valdichiana Toscana](/source/Valdichiana). It is primarily a blending grape, though some [varietal](/source/Varietal) wine is also produced. Grechetto is commonly blended with [Chardonnay](/source/Chardonnay), [Malvasia](/source/Malvasia), [Trebbiano](/source/Trebbiano) and [Verdello](/source/Verdello_(grape)). The grape's thick skin provides good resistance to [downy mildew](/source/Downy_mildew) which can attack the grape late in the [harvest](/source/Harvest_(wine)) season. This makes Grechetto a suitable blending grape in the production of *[Vin Santo](/source/Vin_Santo)*.[1]

## Wine regions

In Italy, the Grechetto grape is found in DOCs of the central region-most notably [Umbria](/source/Umbria_(wine))'s [Orvieto](/source/Orvieto) and [Tuscany](/source/Tuscany) [Foiano](/source/Foiano_della_Chiana) region as well as the DOCs [Valdichiana Toscana](/source/Valdichiana_Toscana), DOCs of [Torgiano](/source/Torgiano) and [Colli Martani](/source/Colli_Martani). The grape has been developing more of a presence in the area as [winemakers](/source/Winemaker) are finding more potential in the grape than in the other main Umbria white [grape varieties](/source/List_of_grape_varieties)-[Drupeggio](/source/Drupeggio) and [Trebbiano](/source/Trebbiano).[1] In [Lazio](/source/Lazio), the grape is found in the [Cervaro](/source/Cervaro) region where the [Antinori](/source/Antinori) family has actively promoted its Cervaro blend of Grechetto and Chardonnay.[2]

## Viticulture and winemaking

The thick skin of Grechetto grapes allows the grape to be [harvested late](/source/Late_harvest_wine) with high [sugar](/source/Sugar) levels. This works well in the production of [dessert wines](/source/Dessert_wine). There are at least two sub-varieties of Grechetto-Grechetto di [Todi](/source/Todi) and Grechetto [Spoletino](/source/Spoleto) with the former being more widely planted in the area.[1] The Grechetto vine is low yielding and able to produce concentrated flavors. The grape is primarily used as a blending grape where it adds richness and structure to the wines. It is most often blended with Chardonnay, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Verdello. In Umbria, Grechetto can add herbal and nutty flavors to the wine.[2]

## Synonyms

Grechetto is also known under the synonyms Greca del Piemonte, Grecherello, Grechetto bianco, Grechetto di Todi, Grechetto Nostrale, Greco, Greco bianco di Perugia, Greco Gentile, Greco Spoletino, Montanarino Bianco, Montanaro, Occhietto, Pignoletto, Pistillo, Pizzinculo, Pocinculo, Pulce, Pulcincolo, Pulcinculo bianco, Pulcinculu, Pulcinella, Stroppa Volpe, Strozza Volpe, Strozzavolpe, and Uva di San Marino.[3]

Despite having a synonym with a similar name, the grape is of no relation to the [Greco bianco](/source/Greco_bianco) grape of the [Calabria](/source/Calabrian_wine) region.[1]
