# Grand Consolation Stakes

The **Grand Consolation Stakes** was an American [Thoroughbred horserace](/source/Thoroughbred_racing) held from 1902 through 1907 at [Benning Race Track](/source/Benning_Race_Track) in the [Deanwood](/source/Deanwood) section of [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington,_D.C.).[1] A race on dirt at a distance of seven [furlongs](/source/Furlong), it was open for two-year-old horses and was the track’s most valuable event.[2]

In 1908, the [United States Congress](/source/United_States_Congress) banned horse racing in the [District of Columbia](/source/Washington,_D.C.). On April 12 the Benning Race Track hosted its last day ever of racing.[3]

## Racing notes

With jockey [Willie Shaw](/source/Willie_Shaw_(jockey)) aboard for trainer [Jack Goldsborough](/source/Andrew_Jackson_Goldsborough) and owner Jack Bennet, [Flip Flap](/source/Flip_Flap_(horse)) won the 1905 edition of the Grand Consolidation Stakes that would see her become the only [filly](/source/Filly) to ever win this important race.

A few races prior to winning the 1906 Grand Consolidation Stakes, [Monfort](/source/Monfort_(horse)) had earned the first win of his career in his second start on May 30, 1906 at [Belmont Park](/source/Belmont_Park) where he won a purse race by six lengths over a large field of 17 competitors while setting a new [track record](/source/Glossary_of_North_American_horse_racing#Track_record/course_record) for the 4½ [furlong](/source/Furlong) event on dirt.[4]
