**Gran Chaco** is a [province](/source/Provinces_of_Bolivia) in the eastern part of [Bolivia](/source/Bolivia), located in the [department of](/source/Departments_of_Bolivia) [Tarija](/source/Tarija_Department).[1] The province voted to become an autonomous region on December 6, 2009.

## Location

*Gran Chaco* province is one of six provinces in the Tarija Department.[1] It is located between 21° 00' and 22° 17' [south](/source/Latitude) and between 62° 16' and 64° 18' [west](/source/Longitude).[1]

The province borders [Chuquisaca Department](/source/Chuquisaca_Department) in the north, [Burnet O'Connor Province](/source/Burnet_O'Connor_Province) in the north-west, [Aniceto Arce Province](/source/Aniceto_Arce_Province) in the south-west, [Argentina](/source/Argentina) in the south, and [Paraguay](/source/Paraguay) in the east.

The province extends over 200 km from north to south, and 200 km from east to west.

## Population

The main [language](/source/Language) of the province is [Spanish](/source/Spanish_language), spoken by 98.4%, while 11.5% of the population speak [Quechua](/source/Quechua_language), 3.0% speak [Aymara](/source/Aymara_language), and 2.7% [Guaraní](/source/Guarani_language).

The population increased from 74,612 inhabitants (1992 [census](/source/Census)) to 116,318 (2001 census), an increase of 55.9%. 41.9% of the population are younger than 15 years old.

50.7% of the population have no access to [electricity](/source/Electricity_generation), 41.1% have no [sanitary facilities](/source/Tap_water) (1992).

19.1% of the population are employed in [agriculture](/source/Primary_sector_of_industry), 1.4% in [mining](/source/Mining), 8.3% in [industry](/source/Secondary_sector_of_industry), 71.2% in [general services](/source/Tertiary_sector_of_industry) (2001).

86.8% of the population are [Catholics](/source/Roman_Catholicism_in_Bolivia), 9.4% are [Protestants](/source/Protestantism_in_South_America) (1992).
