'''Graham Derek Barlow''' (born 26 March 1950)<ref name="Cap">{{cite book |title=If The Cap Fits |last=Bateman |first=Colin |year=1993 |publisher=Tony Williams Publications |isbn=1-869833-21-X |page=[https://archive.org/details/ifcapfits0000unse/page/17 17] |url=https://archive.org/details/ifcapfits0000unse/page/17 }}</ref> is a former [cricket](/source/cricket)er and was a [middle-order](/source/Batting_order_(cricket)) [batsman](/source/Batting_(cricket)) for [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex) and, briefly, for [England](/source/England_cricket_team).

==Early life==
Educated at the former Ealing Grammar School for Boys (now [Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College](/source/Ealing%2C_Hammersmith_and_West_London_College)), Barlow was both a talented cricketer and rugby player in his youth. He has been capped for the [England](/source/England_rugby_union_team) under-23 [Rugby Union](/source/Rugby_Union) team.<ref name="Cap"/>

==Career==
A stylish, confident and powerful player,<ref name="Cap"/> Barlow was an important figure in the powerhouse [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_CCC) team of the late 1970s and early 1980s under [Mike Brearley](/source/Mike_Brearley) (and later [Mike Gatting](/source/Mike_Gatting)), helping them to win the [County Championship](/source/County_Championship) outright in [1976](/source/1976_County_Championship), [1980](/source/1980_County_Championship), [1982](/source/1982_County_Championship) and [1985](/source/1985_County_Championship), and to share it with [Kent](/source/Kent_CCC) in 1977. He was described as a natural athlete, and his quick running between the wickets, often in partnership with the equally fleet of foot [Clive Radley](/source/Clive_Radley), and later in profitable partnerships with [Wilf Slack](/source/Wilf_Slack), was a feature of his play.<ref name="Cap"/> Barlow won many one-day games for his team, helping Middlesex to win the [Gillette Cup](/source/Friends_Provident_Trophy) in [1977](/source/1977_Gillette_Cup) and [1980](/source/1980_Gillette_Cup), the [1983 Benson & Hedges Cup](/source/1983_Benson_%26_Hedges_Cup) and the [1984 NatWest Trophy](/source/1984_NatWest_Trophy). He was an outstanding fieldsman, ranked alongside [Derek Randall](/source/Derek_Randall) and the youthful [David Gower](/source/David_Gower) in the covers. He ran out many batsmen with a fine sense of anticipation, good ground coverage and a fast and accurate arm.

He played three [Test matches](/source/Test_cricket), but was unable to play the major innings, which might have cemented himself in the England team.<ref name="Cap"/> His debut [One Day International](/source/One_Day_International) saw his best innings, an unbeaten 80 against a strong [West Indies](/source/West_Indies_cricket_team) side, but he struggled in five more ODIs after that. He made a strong start in the first-class matches of his [1976–77 tour to India](/source/English_cricket_team_in_India_and_Sri_Lanka_in_1976-77), but could not translate that form into the Test arena.<ref name="Cap"/> At the end of this tour he made a century in a match for the England XI against the Sri Lankans,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1970S/1976-77/ENG_IN_SL/ENG_SL_25-28FEB1977.html|title=Sri Lankans v England XI at Colombo, 25-8 February 1977|publisher=[ESPNCricinfo](/source/ESPNCricinfo)|access-date=20 June 2022}}</ref> but as [Sri Lanka](/source/Sri_Lanka_cricket_team) were five years short of Test status, this did not count towards his Test record. At the start of the [1977 Australia tour of England](/source/Australian_cricket_team_in_England_in_1977) he top-scored for England in their first victory over Australia of the summer in a [One Day International](/source/One_Day_International) in [Manchester](/source/Old_Trafford_cricket_ground),<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/australia-tour-of-england-1977-61348/england-vs-australia-1st-odi-64958/full-scorecard|title=Full scorecard of Australia vs England, 1st ODI, 1977|publisher=[ESPNCricinfo](/source/ESPNCricinfo)|access-date=20 June 2022}}</ref> but he was dropped after another failure in the first Test of the summer.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/australia-tour-of-england-1977-61348/england-vs-australia-1st-test-63190/full-scorecard|title=Full scorecard of England vs Australia, 1st Test, 1977|publisher=[ESPNCricinfo](/source/ESPNCricinfo)|access-date=20 June 2022}}</ref> In five Test innings, Barlow never reached double figures, and defensive flaws saw him ultimately overlooked.<ref name="Cap"/>

He continued as a prolific player for Middlesex, often opening the batting, but ironically for such a fit and athletic player his career was ended prematurely by a persistent [back injury](/source/back_injury).<ref name="Cap"/> He turned to coaching and, in 2001, moved to New Zealand, taking charge of the [Central Districts Stags](/source/Central_Districts_Stags) in 2004.<ref>[http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/139458.html Graham Barlow named new coach of Central Districts] at ESPN Cricinfo, 14 June 2004</ref> He later resided in [Whangārei](/source/Whang%C4%81rei), teaching.
