**Grace May Cassidy**[1] (born 24 March 1993) is an English actress. She began her career as a child actress in the [BBC One](/source/BBC_One) drama *[The Chase](/source/The_Chase_(2006_TV_series))* (2006–2007), the [CBBC](/source/CBBC) series *[Grange Hill](/source/Grange_Hill)* (2007–2008), and the [ITV](/source/ITV_(TV_network)) soap opera *[Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* (2009–2012).

## Early life and education

Cassidy was born in [Salford](/source/Salford). She is the older sister of actress [Raffey Cassidy](/source/Raffey_Cassidy), who portrayed Athena in *[Tomorrowland](/source/Tomorrowland_(film))*. Cassidy joined the [National Youth Theatre](/source/National_Youth_Theatre). She graduated with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in Drama and Theatre Arts from [Goldsmiths, University of London](/source/Goldsmiths%2C_University_of_London) in 2019.[2] She then trained at the [Royal Academy of Dramatic Art](/source/Royal_Academy_of_Dramatic_Art) (RADA), graduating in 2021 with a [Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts) in the Theatre Lab programme.[3]

## Career

Cassidy's most notable role so far is that of Rachel Towers in [BBC](/source/BBC) children's drama *[Grange Hill](/source/Grange_Hill)*, but she has had a number of smaller roles in multiple television series of the past few years, including *[The Street](/source/The_Street_(UK_TV_series))*, *[The Chase](/source/The_Chase_(2006_TV_series))* and *[Marian, Again](/source/Marian%2C_Again)*. Cassidy also had a guest spot in *Casualty 1909*, spin-off of the drama series *[Casualty](/source/Casualty_(TV_series))*, appearing in this occasion alongside her real-life brother Mossie Cassidy in his first TV role.

Cassidy portrayed [Matty Barton](/source/List_of_Emmerdale_characters_(2009)#Matty_Barton) *in [Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* prior to his transition when still going by "Hannah", with her first appearance in the soap being 17 July 2009.[4] On 28 April 2012, Cassidy confirmed her departure from *Emmerdale*.[5]
