**Gotthard Fliegel** (28 December 1873 – 22 June 1947) was a German geographer. His work was mostly on western [Germany](/source/Germany), especially the [Lower Rhine](/source/Lower_Rhine) basin. He was born in [Dammer](/source/Ober_Dammer) in [Lower Silesia](/source/Lower_Silesia) and attended the Maria-Magdalenen school in [Wrocław](/source/Wroc%C5%82aw). He then studied at the [University of Wrocław](/source/University_of_Wroc%C5%82aw), where he gained a Ph.D. after his 1898 dissertation on the spread of marine [Pennsylvanian](/source/Pennsylvanian_(geology)) rocks in South and East Asia. Later that year, he moved to the Geological-Palaeontological Institute in [Bonn](/source/Bonn), where he remained until 1903 as an assistant to [Clemens Schlüter](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Clemens_Schl%C3%BCter&action=edit&redlink=1). He then became a geologist with the Prussian Geological Institute in [Berlin](/source/Berlin) and in 1923 became a department director.
