Not to be confused with [Gotham (disambiguation)](/source/Gotham_(disambiguation)).

**Gothem** (ˈɡûːthɛm)[1] is a populated area, a [socken](/source/Socken) (not to be confused with [parish](/source/Parishes_of_the_Church_of_Sweden)), on the Swedish island of [Gotland](/source/Gotland).[2] It comprises the same area as the [administrative](/source/Registration_districts_in_Sweden) Gothem District, established on 1 January 2016.[3]

## Geography

Gothem is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name given to the small settlement close to the church in the socken, although that name is purely administrative and does not appear on maps. It is situated on the east coast of Gotland.[4] One of Gotland's major streams, [Gothemsån](/source/Gothems%C3%A5n), has its outflow at Åminne in Gothem.[5]

The [medieval](/source/Middle_Ages) [Gothem Church](/source/Gothem_Church) is located in the socken.[6] As of 2019, Gothem Church belongs to Gothem [parish](/source/Parishes_of_the_Church_of_Sweden) in Norra Gotlands [pastorat](/source/Pastorat), along with the churches in [Norrlanda](/source/Norrlanda), [Källunge](/source/K%C3%A4llunge) and [Vallstena](/source/Vallstena).[7][8]

One of the [asteroids](/source/Asteroid) in the [asteroid belt](/source/Asteroid_belt), [10809 Majsterrojr](/source/10809_Majsterrojr), is [named](/source/List_of_Gotland_related_asteroids) after the Majsterrojr cairn in Gothem.[9]

## History

One of the largest [Bronze Age](/source/Bronze_Age) [cairns](/source/Cairn) on Gotland, the **Majsterrojr**, is in Gothem. It is approximately 4 m (13 ft) high and 33 m (108 ft) in diameter and is surrounded by Bronze Age graves. It is situated on a small hill with [stacks](/source/Stack_(geology)), that have also been used as building material for the cairn and the graves.[10]
