'''''Gossia''''' is a genus of [rainforest](/source/rainforest) trees in the [myrtle family](/source/Myrtaceae) first described as a genus in 2003  by [Neil Snow](/source/Neil_Wilton_Snow) and [Gordon Guymer](/source/Gordon_P._Guymer).{{R|APNI|SNOW&GUYMER}} It is native to northeastern [Australia](/source/Australia) ([Queensland](/source/Queensland) and [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales)) as well as several islands of [Papuasia](/source/Papuasia) and [New Caledonia](/source/New_Caledonia).{{R|POWO}}

==Description==
Species of ''Gossia'' are shrubs or trees to about {{cvt|20|m}}, and may be single- or multi-stemmed. [Stipule](/source/Stipule)s are scale- or hair-like, the leaves are leathery and [opposite](/source/Phyllotaxis) or (rarely) sub-opposite, and they have [pinnate](/source/Pinnation) venation.{{R|SNOW&GUYMER|TONG}}

The inflorescences are produced at the end of the branchlets or in the {{botanygloss|axil|leaf axils}}, and may be solitary, paired or clustered, and they may bear single flowers or multiple flowers in [raceme](/source/raceme)s or [panicle](/source/panicle)s.{{R|SNOW&GUYMER|TONG}}

The flowers usually have four or five partially fused, green [sepal](/source/sepal)s which are often persistent at the apex of the fruit. There are four or five white or yellowish concave petals and numerous [stamen](/source/stamen)s. The [styles](/source/Stigma_(botany)) are straight, the [stigmas](/source/Stigma_(botany)) are [terete](/source/terete) and only slightly wider than the style. The ovary has two locules with up to 30 [ovule](/source/ovule)s per placenta.{{R|SNOW&GUYMER|TONG}}

The fruits are, in botanical terms, [berries](/source/berry_(botany)) which range in colour from orange to red to, most commonly, dark purple or black. They contain up to 10 seeds.{{R|SNOW&GUYMER|TONG}}

==Taxonomy==
The type species is ''Gossia retusa.'' The name honours the conservation works of the former [premier](/source/Premiers_of_the_Australian_states) of [Queensland](/source/Queensland), [Wayne Goss](/source/Wayne_Goss).{{R|APNI|SNOW&GUYMER}}
