''' Gossi ''' is a town and [rural commune](/source/Communes_of_Mali) in the [Cercle of Gourma-Rharous](/source/Gourma-Rharous_Cercle) of the [Tombouctou Region](/source/Tombouctou_Region) of [Mali](/source/Mali), lying northeast of [Hombori](/source/Hombori) and southwest of [Gao](/source/Gao). The town is just to the west of the main RN15 highway that links [Mopti](/source/Mopti) with Gao. It is on a seasonal lake, [Mare de Gossi](/source/Mare_de_Gossi), and is surrounded by [nature reserve](/source/nature_reserve)s in which a large herd of [elephant](/source/elephant)s live.

The town is the site of a large cattle [market](/source/market_(place)). The commune contains around 31 villages and in the 2009 census, it had a population of 24,521. == Incidents ==
In May of 2013, the bodies of two [Tuareg](/source/Tuareg_people) men were found just outside of Gossi. Just hours earlier they were stripped naked and trampled on by soldiers, only to be released at the request of a soldier who was a relative. The Minister of Defence attributed the killings to the [Ganda Koy](/source/Ganda_Iso)- a militia that works with the support of local authorities.<ref>House, Freedom. "Mali." On 24 July 2014, a [McDonnell Douglas MD-83](/source/McDonnell_Douglas_MD-83) aircraft flying [Air Algérie](/source/Air_Alg%C3%A9rie) Flight 5017 [crashed](/source/Air_Alg%C3%A9rie_Flight_5017) southeast of Gossi with 116 people on board. The flight had left [Ouagadougou](/source/Ouagadougou) and was headed to [Algiers](/source/Algiers). Initial reports suggested a [sandstorm](/source/sandstorm) might have been to blame.<ref name=BBC>{{citation | title= Algeria passenger plane wreckage found in Mali | publisher=BBC News Africa | date=24 July 2014 | url= https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28475335 }}</ref> Gossi was also the site of the capture of Mimi Ould Baba Ould El Mokhtar, believed to be responsible for [a terrorist attack in Grand-Bassam](/source/2016_Grand-Bassam_shootings), by [French military forces](/source/French_Armed_Forces).<ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.france24.com/en/20170112-ivory-coast-france-resort-attack-arrest-mali |publisher=[France24](/source/France24) |title=Alleged mastermind of Ivorian resort attack arrested, says RFI |first=Leela |last=Jacinto |date=January 12, 2017 |quote=Mimi Ould Baba Ould El Mokhtar -- also known as Mimi Ould Baba Ould Cheikh – was arrested near the town of Gossi in northern Mali earlier this month, Ivorian security sources told FRANCE 24's sister radio station, RFI, on Thursday. |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170122213617/http://www.france24.com/en/20170112-ivory-coast-france-resort-attack-arrest-mali |archive-date=January 22, 2017}}</ref>
