# Gordon Mursell

**Alfred Gordon Mursell** (born 4 May 1949) is a retired British [Anglican](/source/Anglican) bishop and author. From 2005 to 2010, he was the [Bishop of Stafford](/source/Bishop_of_Stafford) in the [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England).[1]

Mursell was educated at [Ardingly College](/source/Ardingly_College) and [Brasenose College, Oxford](/source/Brasenose_College,_Oxford).[2] [Ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1974 he began his career with a [curacy](/source/Curate) at St Mary [Walton](/source/Walton,_Liverpool), [Liverpool](/source/Anglican_Diocese_of_Liverpool)[3] and was then successively [Vicar](/source/Vicar) of St John's [East Dulwich](/source/East_Dulwich), a [tutor](/source/Tutor) at [Wells Theological College](/source/Wells_Theological_College), [Team Rector](/source/Rector_(academia)) of [Stafford](/source/Stafford) (1991–1999), Provost (1999–2002/3)[a] and then [Dean of Birmingham](/source/Dean_of_Birmingham) (2002/3–2005) [4] before his ordination to the [episcopate](/source/Suffragan_Bishop)[5] as the suffragan [Bishop of Stafford](/source/Bishop_of_Stafford) - a post he vacated in June 2010. A prolific author, he is also a keen hill walker.[2] He is a member of the [Athenaeum Club](/source/Athenaeum_Club,_London).
