# Gordon Kampe

**Gordon Kampe** (born 10 September 1976)[1] is a German composer and academic teacher.

## Career

Kampe was born in [Herne, North Rhine-Westphalia](/source/Herne,_North_Rhine-Westphalia), Germany.[2] He completed an apprenticeship as an electrician in 1995 and studied after his *[Abitur](/source/Abitur)* composition with [Hans-Joachim Hespos](/source/Hans-Joachim_Hespos), [Adriana Hölszky](/source/Adriana_H%C3%B6lszky) (Rostock) and [Nicolaus A. Huber](/source/Nicolaus_A._Huber) (Essen).[2] In 2008, he finished his dissertation about fairy tale opera of the 20th century at the [Folkwang University of the Arts](/source/Folkwang_University_of_the_Arts).[1]

Kampe is notably interested in the opera. Since 2009 he has written a number of commissioned works, among other for the [Stuttgart State Opera](/source/Staatsoper_Stuttgart) (*Zivilcourage. Musik für einen Platz*, world premiere 2009),[3][4] the [Oldenburg State Theatre](/source/Oldenburgisches_Staatstheater) (*ANOIA*, world premiere 2012)[5][6] and the [Deutsche Oper Berlin](/source/Deutsche_Oper_Berlin) (*Kannst du pfeifen, Johanna*, world premiere 2013).[7][8] The world premiere of *PLÄTZE. DÄCHER. LEUTE. WEGE. Musiktheater für ein utopisches Bielefeld* took place at [Bielefeld Opera](/source/Bielefeld_Opera) in 2015.[9]

Kampe's opera *[Dogville](/source/Dogville_(opera))*, based on the [film with the same name](/source/Dogville) by [Lars von Trier](/source/Lars_von_Trier), premiered at the [Aalto Theatre](/source/Aalto_Theatre) in [Essen](/source/Essen) in 2023.[10]

Kampe has been a professor of composition and music theory at the [Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg](/source/Hochschule_f%C3%BCr_Musik_und_Theater_Hamburg) since 2017.[11] He lives and works in [Hamburg](/source/Hamburg), Germany.
