Young was born at Carrigshane, near [Midleton](/source/Midleton), [County Cork](/source/County_Cork), Ireland. He was educated at [Shrewsbury School](/source/Shrewsbury_School) and [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College%2C_Cambridge). While studying at Cambridge he was admitted to the [Inner Temple](/source/Inner_Temple) and after graduating he was [called to the bar](/source/called_to_the_bar). He returned to Ireland and was admitted to [King's Inns](/source/King's_Inns). He died in County Cork.<ref>{{acad |id=YN869G2 |name=Young, Goodwin}}</ref>
