**Gooderstone** is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) in the [English](/source/England) county of [Norfolk](/source/Norfolk).

The village is located 5.7 miles (9.2 km) south-west of [Swaffham](/source/Swaffham) and 30 miles (48 km) west of [Norwich](/source/Norwich).

## History

Gooderstone's name is of [Anglo-Saxon](/source/Anglo-Saxon) origin and derives from the [Old English](/source/Old_English) for *Guthere's* farm or settlement.[1]

In the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) of 1086, Gooderstone is listed as a settlement of 39 households in the [hundred](/source/Hundred_(county_division)) of South Greenhoe. In 1086, the village was part of the [East Anglian](/source/East_Anglia) estates of [Godric the Steward](/source/Godric_the_Steward).[2]

During the [First World War](/source/First_World_War), a night airfield was built in Gooderstone which was repurposed during the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War) as a bombing decoy site.[3]

## Geography

According to the [2021 census](/source/2021_United_Kingdom_census), Gooderstone has a population of 400 people which shows an increase from the 363 people recorded in the [2011 census](/source/2011_United_Kingdom_census).[4]

The church is located along the course of the [River Gadder](/source/River_Gadder).

## St. George's Church

Gooderstone's parish church is dedicated to [Saint George](/source/Saint_George) and dates from the Thirteenth Century. The church is located within the village on Church View and has been Grade I listed since 1960.[5] The church is no longer open for Sunday services.[6]

St. George's was lightly restored in the [Victorian era](/source/Victorian_era) and features Sixteenth Century [pews](/source/Pew) and dado screen.[7]

## Amenities

Gooderston Cricket Club has been registered for over a hundred year and fields a First XI and a Friendly Side.[8]

Gooderstone Primary is a Church of England school and is part of the Diocese of Norwich Academies Trust. The headteacher is Mrs S. Godbold.[9]

Gooderstone Water Gardens and Nature Trail is open daily throughout the year.

## Governance

Gooderstone is part of the [electoral ward](/source/Wards_and_electoral_divisions_of_the_United_Kingdom) of Bedingfeld for local elections and is part of the [district](/source/Non-metropolitan_district) of [Breckland](/source/Breckland).

The village's national constituency is [South West Norfolk](/source/South_West_Norfolk_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) which has been represented by [Labour's](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) [Terry Jermy MP](/source/Terry_Jermy) since 2024.

## War Memorial

Gooderstone War Memorial is located on the wall of St. George's Churchyard and is a square plinth with a long a tall [latin cross](/source/Latin_cross).[10] The memorial lists the following names for the [First World War](/source/First_World_War):[11][12]
