According to the ''Xingshi Kaolüe'' (姓氏考略), the surname comes from {{ill|Ji Ye|zh|季冶}} (季冶) of the [State of Lu](/source/State_of_Lu) during the [Spring and Autumn period](/source/Spring_and_Autumn_period). His [courtesy name](/source/courtesy_name) was Gongye, which his descendants adopted as a surname.<ref name="王照百家姓-公冶"/>
