The '''golden barb''' or '''golden dwarf barb''' ('''''Pethia gelius''''') is a species of [cyprinid](/source/cyprinid) [fish](/source/fish) native to inland waters in [Asia](/source/Asia), and is found in [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan), [India](/source/India), and [Bangladesh](/source/Bangladesh). It has also been introduced to waters in [Colombia](/source/Colombia).  It natively inhabits [river](/source/river)s, and standing water with a [silt](/source/silt)y bottom.  They live in a [tropical](/source/tropical) climate in water with a 6.0 - 6.5 [pH](/source/pH), a water hardness of 8–15 [dGH](/source/dGH), and a temperature range of {{cvt|68|-|77|°F|°C}}.  It feeds on [benthic](/source/benthic) and [plankton](/source/plankton)ic [crustacean](/source/crustacean)s, and [insect](/source/insect)s. This species can grow in length up to {{convert|5.1|cm|in}} [TL](/source/fish_measurement). The golden barb is an open water, substrate egg-scatterer, and adults do not guard the eggs.  They primarily spawn in shallow water.
