In the early 1950s, [Japanese](/source/Japan) interest in the [iron](/source/iron_ore) and [manganese ore](/source/manganese_ore)s of [Portuguese Goa](/source/Portuguese_India) led [Raosaheb Gogte](/source/Raosaheb_Gogte), a lawyer at the time, to explore the possibility of mining for the ores in the districts of [Ratnagiri](/source/Ratnagiri_district) and [North Kanara](/source/North_Kanara). In 1954, he began mining for manganese near Kuveshi. With financial encouragement from local lenders, Gogte established the Gogte Mines company and began mining for iron ore at [Redi](/source/Redi%2C_Maharashtra) in 1957, having leased 187 acres and 16 [guntha](/source/guntha)s for the project, and producing 15,000 tonnes of iron ore within the first four months.[{{cite book |last1=Kamath |first1=M. On May 17, 1980, Gogte established Gogte Textiles, venturing into [textiles](/source/textiles), manufacturing [cotton yarn](/source/cotton_yarn)s and [fabric](/source/fabric)s. Under the advisement of [S. M. Krishna](/source/S._M._Krishna), he pursued to obtain a license from the [Government of Karnataka](/source/Government_of_Karnataka) under [Gundu Rao](/source/Gundu_Rao), to set up a [textile mill](/source/textile_mill) in Kakti, acquiring 100 acres for the venture, and ordering weaving machinery from [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland). After promises of financial encouragement from the [Ministry of Industry](/source/Ministry_of_Commerce_and_Industry_(India)) fell through, Gogte appealed to [R. N. Malhotra](/source/R._N._Malhotra) at the [Reserve Bank of India](/source/Reserve_Bank_of_India) for provision of [working capital](/source/working_capital).
