# Goethals Medal

The **Goethals Medal** is a national award given annually by the [Society of American Military Engineers](/source/Society_of_American_Military_Engineers) (SAME) to a [registered engineer](/source/Professional_Engineer) who is also a member of SAME prior to nomination. The nominated engineer must have made *eminent and notable contributions in engineering, design, or construction in the past five years.*

The award is named in honor of General [George Washington Goethals](/source/George_Washington_Goethals), a [civil engineer](/source/Civil_engineer) and [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) [officer](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) best known for his work as [Chief engineer](/source/Chief_engineer) on the [Panama Canal](/source/Panama_Canal) and his service in [WWI](/source/WWI) as Acting [Quartermaster General](/source/Quartermaster_General_of_the_United_States_Army).[1][2][3]
