It is derived from [Govinda](/source/Govinda), and its variations [Gobind](/source/Govinda), [Gobinda](/source/Govinda), and [Govind](/source/Govinda), which is another name for the Hindu deity [Krishna](/source/Krishna) and means lord of herdsmen. In [India](/source/India) it is used as a first name, but many of the children of the indentured laborers in the aforementioned countries used their [fathers' first name as their surname](/source/Patronymic_surname).[1] People with the surname Gobin in this sense include:
