**Glasgow Life** is the principal [trading name](/source/Trading_name) and brand of Culture and Sport Glasgow, a [charity](/source/Charitable_organization) based in [Glasgow](/source/Glasgow), [Scotland](/source/Scotland). It is an [Arm's Length External Organisation](/source/Quango), separate from [Glasgow City Council](/source/Glasgow_City_Council),[2] with operating responsibility for managing the [arts](/source/Arts), [music](/source/Music), [sports](/source/Sports), [events](/source/Convention_(meeting)), [festivals](/source/Festivals), [libraries](/source/Libraries) and learning programmes for the council.[3] It is the 14th largest charity, by income, in Scotland,[4] and its formation has been described as "one of the highest profile transfers of functions from a council to a charitable Trust in the UK" and that "...the inclusion of libraries was unprecedented".[5]

## History

Culture and Sport Glasgow was formed as a [company](/source/Company) in December 2006,[6] and a registered charity from February 2007.[7] The organisation's [board](/source/Board_of_directors) agreed to adopt the name and brand "Glasgow Life" in January 2010.[8]

## Responsibilities

Glasgow Life are responsible for six service areas[3] within the city:

- Public [Libraries](/source/Libraries), including [32 community libraries](/source/Culture_in_Glasgow#Community_Libraries), 29 school libraries and the [Mitchell Library](/source/Mitchell_Library).

- Young Glasgow, providing services aimed at children, young people and their parent/carers.

## Structure and Governance

The charity is controlled by [Glasgow City Council](/source/Glasgow_City_Council). It is governed by a [Board of directors](/source/Board_of_directors),[18] consisting of:

- 5 partner [directors](/source/Director_(business)) (drawn from within [Glasgow City Council](/source/Glasgow_City_Council))
- [Executive Director](/source/Executive_Director)

The Chair is Councillor Bailie Christie,[19] and the Chief Executive is Susan Deighan.[20]

## Funding

The majority of the income for the organisation is provided as a service fee from [Glasgow City Council](/source/Glasgow_City_Council), with annual reports showing this is approximately 60% of income.
