The **Gjemnessund Bridge** ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *Gjemnessundbrua*) is a [suspension bridge](/source/Suspension_bridge) that crosses the Gjemnessundet [strait](/source/Strait) between the mainland and the island of [Bergsøya](/source/Bergs%C3%B8ya%2C_Gjemnes) in [Gjemnes Municipality](/source/Gjemnes_Municipality) in [Møre og Romsdal](/source/M%C3%B8re_og_Romsdal) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The 1,257-metre-long (4,124 ft) bridge was the [longest suspension bridge in Norway](/source/List_of_bridges_in_Norway_by_length) until the opening of the [Hardanger Bridge](/source/Hardanger_Bridge) in 2013, although it did not have the longest span (623 metres or 2,044 feet), being eclipsed by the [Askøy Bridge](/source/Ask%C3%B8y_Bridge).

Gjemnessund Bridge

Gjemnessund Bridge was opened in 1992, and has 21 spans with a maximum clearance to the sea of 43 metres (141 ft). It was built as part of the [Krifast](/source/Krifast) project, the mainland road connection of the city of [Kristiansund](/source/Kristiansund_(town)) (along with the [Freifjord Tunnel](/source/Freifjord_Tunnel) and the [Bergsøysund Bridge](/source/Bergs%C3%B8ysund_Bridge)).[1][2][3]

Many bridges slowly deteriorate and need to be repaired because the salty [seawater](/source/Seawater) damages the [concrete](/source/Concrete) and the iron inside it. The Gjemnessund Bridge has had a problem with [seabirds](/source/Seabird), whose [manure](/source/Manure) contain salt and [ammonia](/source/Ammonia). The salt and ammonia damages the concrete. To prevent this, the bridge is cleaned, and the critical parts of the concrete are covered with an [elastic](/source/Elasticity_(physics)) membrane that protects the concrete against the manure and the harmful content.[4]
