The late British DJ and personality [Steve Walsh](/source/Steve_Walsh_(disc_jockey)) was influenced by [Band Aid](/source/Band_Aid_(band))'s "[Do They Know It's Christmas?](/source/Do_They_Know_It's_Christmas%3F)" and [USA for Africa](/source/USA_for_Africa)'s "[We Are the World](/source/We_Are_the_World)", for those hits became a very fashionable vehicle of raising money and awareness. Walsh contacted Steve MacIntosh of [the Cool Notes](/source/the_Cool_Notes) about creating a [charity supergroup](/source/charity_supergroup) to make a similar charity record for the UK to support [multiple sclerosis](/source/multiple_sclerosis) research.
MacIntosh wrote the song "Give, Give, Give" and asked [Paul Hardcastle](/source/Paul_Hardcastle) to produce the song with him. Walsh and Hardcastle sent MacIntosh a demo of the song and it was then agreed to use the song to move ahead with the project. [Phil Fearon](/source/Phil_Fearon), MacIntosh's [the Cool Notes](/source/the_Cool_Notes), [Mel & Kim](/source/Mel_%26_Kim) and [Hazell Dean](/source/Hazell_Dean) were some of the British dance and soul acts involved, alongside comedian [Lenny Henry](/source/Lenny_Henry). American acts such as [Jean Carne](/source/Jean_Carne), [Odyssey](/source/Odyssey_(band)), Steve Mancha, [Kenny G](/source/Kenny_G) and [Edwin Starr](/source/Edwin_Starr) also took part.
The first version was released in the autumn of 1986 under the name '''Disco Aid'''. It was a minor hit on the [UK Singles Chart](/source/UK_Singles_Chart), peaking at No. 85.
In 1987, the song was re-produced together with British producers [Stock Aitken Waterman](/source/Stock_Aitken_Waterman). This time it was released under the act name '''Dance Aid'''. Other participants included [Sinitta](/source/Sinitta), [Ruby Turner](/source/Ruby_Turner) and [Pepsi & Shirlie](/source/Pepsi_%26_Shirlie). It failed to chart in the UK, but was a top 40 hit in Belgium.
