**Giuseppe Petrocchi** (born 19 August 1948) is an [Italian Catholic](/source/Catholic_Church_in_Italy) prelate who served as [Archbishop of L'Aquila](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_L'Aquila) from 2013 to 2024. [Pope Francis](/source/Pope_Francis) made him a [cardinal](/source/Cardinal_(Catholic_Church)) on 28 June 2018.

## Life

Giuseppe Petrocchi was born on 19 August 1948 in [Ascoli Piceno](/source/Ascoli_Piceno).

Petrocchi commenced his ecclesial studies in his [home diocese](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Ascoli_Piceno) on 4 October 1965 where he finished his high school education before being sent to the [Pontifico Seminario Romano Maggiore](/source/Pontifical_Roman_Major_Seminary) in September 1967. He completed his studies at [the Lateran](/source/Pontifical_Lateran_University) where he obtained a [bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree) before pursuing further studies at [Sapienza University of Rome](/source/Sapienza_University_of_Rome) and at the [University of Macerata](/source/University_of_Macerata).

He was [ordained](/source/Ordination_in_the_Catholic_Church) to the [priesthood](/source/Priesthood_in_the_Catholic_Church) on 14 September 1973 in the church of San Pietro Martire and began work as a teacher and pastor.[1] [Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II) appointed him [Bishop of Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno) on 27 June 1998 and he received [episcopal consecration](/source/Episcopal_consecration) the following 20 September in [Ascoli Piceno](/source/Ascoli_Piceno) from Bishop [Silvano Montevecchi](/source/Silvano_Montevecchi), the [co-consecrators](/source/Co-consecrators) being Bishops [Domenico Pecile](/source/Domenico_Pecile) and [Marcello Morgante](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marcello_Morgante&action=edit&redlink=1).[1] He took possession of his diocese on 18 October.

He was appointed [Archbishop of L'Aquila](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_L'Aquila) on 8 June 2013, took possession the following month,[2] and received the [pallium](/source/Pallium) from the Pope on 29 June 2013 in [Saint Peter's Basilica](/source/Saint_Peter's_Basilica). On 28 June 2018 [Pope Francis](/source/Pope_Francis) made Archbishop Petrocchi a [cardinal](/source/Cardinal_(Catholic_Church)), assigning him the titular church of [San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini](/source/San_Giovanni_Battista_dei_Fiorentini).[3]

On 22 September 2018 Petrocchi was appointed a member of the [Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State](/source/Pontifical_Commission_for_Vatican_City_State),[4] of the [Congregation for Catholic Education](/source/Congregation_for_Catholic_Education) on 6 October 2018,[5] and of the [Congregation for the Causes of Saints](/source/Congregation_for_the_Causes_of_Saints) on 27 April 2019.[6] In April 2020 he was appointed to head a [second commission](/source/Study_Commission_on_the_Women's_Diaconate) that was to study the question of the ordination of women to the diaconate.[7][8]

Pope Francis accepted his resignation as archbishop on 1 August 2024.[9]

He participated as a [cardinal elector](/source/Cardinal_electors_in_the_2025_papal_conclave) in the [2025 papal conclave](/source/2025_papal_conclave) that elected [Pope Leo XIV](/source/Pope_Leo_XIV).[10]
