'''Giulio Gabrielli''' (1601 – 13 August 1677) was an [Italian](/source/Italian_people) [Catholic](/source/Roman_Catholic_Church) [cardinal](/source/Cardinal_(Catholicism)). He is sometimes referred to as '''Giulio Gabrielli the Elder''' to distinguish him from [Giulio Gabrielli the Younger](/source/Giulio_Gabrielli_the_Younger).

==Early life==

Gabrielli was born 1601 in [Rome](/source/Rome), the son of Antonio Gabrielli and Prudenzia Lancellotta,<ref name=TI>{{cite web |url=https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/giulio-gabrielli_%28Dizionario-Biografico%29/ |title=Gabrielli, Giulio |last=Busolini |first=Dario |date=1998 |website=Treccani Italy |publisher=|access-date=2024-01-04|quote=}}</ref> of the [noble](/source/Italian_nobility) [Gabrielli](/source/Gabrielli_family) family and relatives of [Pope Clement X](/source/Pope_Clement_X). He went into the service of the Church as a [Referendary](/source/Referendary) of the ''Tribunals of the [Apostolic Signatura](/source/Apostolic_Signatura) of Justice and of Grace''. He was a cleric (and later dean) of the [Apostolic Chamber](/source/Apostolic_Chamber). On 27 Apr 1642, he was [consecrated](/source/consecrated) bishop by [Antonio Marcello Barberini (seniore)](/source/Antonio_Marcello_Barberini_(seniore)), [Cardinal-Priest](/source/Cardinal-Priest) of [San Pietro in Vincoli](/source/San_Pietro_in_Vincoli), with [Faustus Poli](/source/Faustus_Poli), [Titular Archbishop](/source/Titular_Archbishop) of ''Amasea'', and [Celso Zani](/source/Celso_Zani). [Bishop Emeritus of Città della Pieve](/source/Bishop_of_Citt%C3%A0_della_Pieve), serving as [co-consecrators](/source/co-consecrators).<ref name=MirandaGiuGab /><ref name=CatHierGiuGab />

==Cardinalate==

Gabrielli was elevated to Cardinal by [Pope Urban VIII](/source/Pope_Urban_VIII) in December 1641<ref name=TI /> and in February 1642 was made Cardinal-Priest of [Santa Maria Nova](/source/Santa_Francesca_Romana) and was elected [Bishop of Ascoli Piceno](/source/Bishop_of_Ascoli_Piceno). He was [consecrated](/source/consecrated) by Cardinal [Antonio Marcello Barberini](/source/Antonio_Marcello_Barberini). Later that year, he opted for the [deacon](/source/deacon)ry of [Sant'Agata dei Goti](/source/Sant'Agata_dei_Goti). His contemporary, [John Bargrave](/source/John_Bargrave), suggested his promotions within the Church were more related to Pope Urban's wish to sell his position to a higher bidder, rather than on merit or service<ref name=bargrave>''Pope Alexander the Seventh and the College of Cardinals'' by [John Bargrave](/source/John_Bargrave), edited by [James Craigie Robertson](/source/James_Craigie_Robertson) (London: Camden Society 1867; reprint; 2009) (Bargrave died in 1680)</ref>{{unreliable source?|date=February 2017}} and that as a result, Gabrielli lived a respected but fairly meagre life. What wealth he did amass, Bargrave ascribed to his [frugality](/source/frugality).

In 1643, Gabrielli was appointed co-[legate](/source/Papal_legate) in [Urbino](/source/Urbino) (together with Cardinal [Francesco Barberini](/source/Francesco_Barberini_(seniore))), a position he held until 1646. He participated in the [Papal conclave of 1644](/source/Papal_conclave%2C_1644) but left early due to illness. The conclave elected [Pope Innocent X](/source/Pope_Innocent_X).

He participated in the [conclave of 1655](/source/Papal_conclave%2C_1655)<ref name=MirandaGiuGab /> that elected [Pope Alexander VII](/source/Pope_Alexander_VII) and opted for the deaconry of [Santa Maria in Via Lata](/source/Santa_Maria_in_Via_Lata) later that year. In March of the following year, he became Cardinal-Priest of [Santa Prisca](/source/Santa_Prisca).

In 1667, he participated in the [conclave](/source/Papal_conclave%2C_1667) which elected [Pope Clement IX](/source/Pope_Clement_IX)<ref name=MirandaGiuGab /> and was appointed Cardinal-Priest of [Santa Prassede](/source/Santa_Prassede). Less than six months later, he was made Cardinal-Priest of [San Lorenzo in Lucina](/source/San_Lorenzo_in_Lucina). In 1668, he was appointed Cardinal-[Bishop of Sabina](/source/Bishop_of_Sabina) but, retained the administration of Ascoli Piceno until later that year.

==Later life==

Gabrielli served in a number of Church administrative roles during the period best described as his semi-[retirement](/source/retirement), including administrator of the [Diocese of Rieti](/source/Diocese_of_Rieti) and Governor General of [Fermo](/source/Fermo). He also participated in the conclaves of [1669-1670](/source/Papal_conclave%2C_1669-1670), which elected [Pope Clement X](/source/Pope_Clement_X), and [1676](/source/Papal_conclave%2C_1676), which elected [Pope Innocent XI](/source/Pope_Innocent_XI).<ref name=MirandaGiuGab />

He died on 31 August 1677 from malaria; he was buried in the Gabrielli chapel of [Santa Maria sopra Minerva](/source/Santa_Maria_sopra_Minerva).<ref name=TI />
