# Girish Shambu

**Girish Shambu** is an American film blogger, [cinephile](/source/Cinephile), film critic and educator.

Besides maintaining an eponymous blog, which has become a popular center for the film blogging community,[1] Shambu has contributed writing to including *[Senses of Cinema](/source/Senses_of_Cinema)*, *[Artforum](/source/Artforum)*, *[Cineaste](/source/Cineaste_(magazine))* and [The Auteurs' Notebook](/source/The_Auteurs'_Notebook).

## Biography

Girish Shambu received a [B. Tech.](/source/B._Tech.) in [chemical engineering](/source/Chemical_engineering) from the [Indian Institute of Technology](/source/Indian_Institute_of_Technology) in [Kharagpur](/source/Kharagpur), [India](/source/India) and a [Ph.D.](/source/Ph.D.) in management systems / computer science from the [State University of New York at Buffalo](/source/University_at_Buffalo,_The_State_University_of_New_York).[2] Shambu teaches management at [Canisius College](/source/Canisius_College),[1] and has been the recipient of the Donald E. Calvert Teaching Excellence Award twice.[2]

Shambu began blogging on film in 2004, and within a few years has become one of the most popular of a growing community of devoted [cinephiles](/source/Cinephile) writing online. In an interview for a sub-site of the film criticism website *The House Next Door* in 2006, Shambu named [Pauline Kael](/source/Pauline_Kael)'s review of [Brian De Palma](/source/Brian_De_Palma)'s *[Dressed to Kill](/source/Dressed_to_Kill_(1980_film))*, [James Monaco](/source/James_Monaco)'s book on the [French New Wave](/source/French_New_Wave) (which he read several times before he had ever seen a [French film](/source/Cinema_of_France)), [J. Hoberman](/source/J._Hoberman)'s *[Vulgar Modernism](/source/Vulgar_Modernism)* and the website of cinephile [Acquarello](/source/Acquarello_(flim_critic)) as having had a formative influence on his interest in film.[3]

In August 2011, as co-editor with [Adrian Martin](/source/Adrian_Martin_(film_critic)), Shambu launched the film journal LOLA.[4]
