**Gylmar dos Santos Neves** (Brazilian Portuguese: [\[ʒiwˈmaʁ duˈsɐ̃tuz ˈnɛvis\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Portuguese); 22 August 1930 – 25 August 2013), known simply as **Gilmar**, was a Brazilian [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played [goalkeeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football)) for [Corinthians](/source/Sport_Club_Corinthians_Paulista) and [Santos](/source/Santos_FC) and was a member of the [Brazil national team](/source/Brazil_national_football_team) in three [World Cups](/source/FIFA_World_Cup).[2] He was elected the best Brazilian goalkeeper of the 20th century and one of the best in the world by the [IFFHS](/source/IFFHS). He is remembered for his sober style on the pitch and his peaceful personality.[3]

Alex Bellos says in his book *Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life* that Gilmar is named after his parents, **Gil**berto and **Mar**ia. Gilmar was the starting goalkeeper for [Pelé](/source/Pel%C3%A9)'s Santos and Brazilian national teams of the 1960s. In 1998, he was awarded the [FIFA Order of Merit](/source/FIFA_Order_of_Merit).[4]

## Club career

Gilmar was born in [Santos](/source/Santos_(S%C3%A3o_Paulo)), [São Paulo](/source/S%C3%A3o_Paulo_(state)), and started his career playing for hometown side [Jabaquara](/source/Jabaquara_Atl%C3%A9tico_Clube). In 1951 he joined [Corinthians](/source/Sport_Club_Corinthians_Paulista), winning three [Campeonato Paulista](/source/Campeonato_Paulista) titles with the club in 1951, 1952 and 1954.

In 1961, Gilmar signed for [Santos](/source/Santos_FC), being a part of the team who was known as *[Os Santásticos](/source/Os_Sant%C3%A1sticos)*. An immediate starter, he won five Campeonato Paulista (1962, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968), five [Taça Brasil](/source/Ta%C3%A7a_Brasil) (1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965), two [Copa Libertadores](/source/Copa_Libertadores) (1962 and 1963) and two [Intercontinental Cups](/source/Intercontinental_Cup_(1960%E2%80%932004)) (1962 against [Eusébio](/source/Eus%C3%A9bio)'s [Benfica](/source/S.L._Benfica) and 1963 against [Milan](/source/A.C._Milan)).

## International career

Gilmar played 94 times with the [Brazil national team](/source/Brazil_national_football_team).[3] He was selected to the national squad for three straight World Cups, between [1958](/source/1958_FIFA_World_Cup) and [1966](/source/1966_FIFA_World_Cup).[3] He was part of the starting team in the first two World Cups Brazil won, in [1958](/source/1958_FIFA_World_Cup) and [1962](/source/1962_FIFA_World_Cup), and is the only goalkeeper to win two consecutive World Cups in the starting position.

## Style of play

Regarded by pundits as one of the greatest Brazilian goalkeepers of all time,[5][6] Gilmar was an agile shot-stopper, who possessed excellent reflexes, and who was also known for his composure under pressure, as well as his ability to inspire a sense of calm and confidence in his defenders.[7]

## Death

Gilmar died of a stroke on 25 August 2013, three days after his 83rd birthday.[3]
