# Gilbertidia

***Gilbertidia*** is a genus of marine [ray-finned fishes](/source/Ray-finned_fish) belonging to the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Psychrolutidae](/source/Psychrolutidae), the fatheads and toadfishes. These fishes are found in the northern [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean).

## Taxonomy

*Gilberitidia* was first proposed as a genus name by the Argentinian-Latvian [naturalist](/source/Naturalist) and [entomologist](/source/Entomologist) [Carlos Berg](/source/Carlos_Berg) in 1898 as a replacement name for *Gilbertina*, a name proposed in 1895 by the American [ichthyologists](/source/Ichthyologists) [David Starr Jordan](/source/David_Starr_Jordan) and [Edwin Chapin Starks](/source/Edwin_Chapin_Starks). which was invalid under the [ICZN](/source/International_Code_of_Zoological_Nomenclature) as it was preoccupied by the [gastropod](/source/Gastropoda) fossil genus *[Gilbertina](/source/Gilbertina)* [Morlet](/source/Laurent-Joseph_Morlet), 1888. The [type species](/source/Type_species) is *Gilbertina sigalutes* which is a [synonym](/source/Synonym_(taxonomy)) of *[Psychrolutes sigalutes](/source/Psychrolutes_sigalutes)* and this would normally mean that *Gilbertina* is a synonym of *[Psychrolutes](/source/Psychrolutes)*. In 1935 [Peter Schmidt](/source/Peter_Schmidt_(zoologist)) proposed the genus *Platycottus* for *Gilbertidia pustulosa*, however, *[Catalog of Fishes](/source/Catalog_of_Fishes)* treats this as a synonym of *Psychrolutes* as well.[1]
