# Gilbert Gabriel

**Gilbert Alexander Gabriel** (born 16 November 1956) is a songwriter, film composer, producer and lecturer. He studied piano and clarinet at [Dartington College of Arts](/source/Dartington_College_of_Arts) and [Goldsmiths](/source/Goldsmiths,_University_of_London) before forming the British folk rock trio [The Dream Academy](/source/The_Dream_Academy), whose 1985 single "[Life in a Northern Town](/source/Life_in_a_Northern_Town)" was a global hit, reaching the top ten of the charts in Australia and the United States.[1]

Since then he has been writing and producing music for film and television in the United Kingdom and Poland. He has also lectured on 'film and the soundtrack' in [Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) as well as at [Liverpool](/source/University_of_Liverpool) and [Cardiff](/source/Cardiff_University) universities.[1]
