Chirchir was a [3000 metres steeplechase](/source/3000_metres_steeplechase) silver medalist at both the [1994 Commonwealth Games](/source/1994_Commonwealth_Games) and [1995 All-Africa Games](/source/1995_All-Africa_Games). At the [1995 IAAF World Cross Country Championships](/source/1995_IAAF_World_Cross_Country_Championships) in Durham, Chirchir was a member of the Kenyan team which claimed a gold medal in the senior men's race.
