It is situated on the [North American Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide_of_the_Americas). It was used by part of the [Lewis and Clark Expedition](/source/Lewis_and_Clark_Expedition) on their return trip.<ref>Saindon, 2003 p.131</ref><ref>Woodger, Toropov, 2009 pp.xx</ref> Gibbons Pass is also one of the most historic passes in Montana. The conflict with the Nez Perce Indians by Captain Gibbons began here.
