# Giant sunbird

The **giant sunbird** (***Dreptes thomensis***) is a species of bird in the family [Nectariniidae](/source/Nectariniidae). It is the only species in the genus ***Dreptes***.[1] It is [endemic](/source/Endemism) to the island of [São Tomé](/source/S%C3%A3o_Tom%C3%A9_Island) ([São Tomé and Príncipe](/source/S%C3%A3o_Tom%C3%A9_and_Pr%C3%ADncipe)), where it occurs in the central massif.[2]

Its natural [habitats](/source/Habitat) are [subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest](/source/Subtropical_or_tropical_moist_lowland_forest) and subtropical or tropical moist [montane forests](/source/Montane_forest). It is threatened by [habitat loss](/source/Habitat_loss). The species was first described by [José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Vicente_Barbosa_du_Bocage) in 1889.
