# Gheorghe Cosma

**Gheorghe Cosma** (February 22, 1892–July 1, 1969) was a [Romanian](/source/Romania) [major general](/source/Major_general) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II).

Cosma was born in [Pogana](/source/Pogana), [Tutova County](/source/Tutova_County), in the historical region [Moldavia](/source/Moldavia) (now in [Vaslui County](/source/Vaslui_County)).[1] He graduated from the Artillery Officers School in 1914 with the rank of [second lieutenant](/source/Second_lieutenant). He served during the [Romanian Campaign](/source/Romania_during_World_War_I) of [World War I](/source/World_War_I) and was promoted to [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant) in 1916 and [captain](/source/Captain) in 1917. In 1924 he graduated from the [Higher War School](/source/Carol_I_National_Defence_University) and was promoted to [major](/source/Major_(rank)). He advanced in rank to [lieutenant colonel](/source/Lieutenant_colonel) in 1934 and [colonel](/source/Colonel) in 1938.[2]

He pursued his career in 1940 as [Chief of Staff](/source/Chief_of_staff) Higher Technical Department. In 1941, he served as Commanding Officer [6th Artillery Regiment](/source/6th_Artillery_Regiment_(Romania)) and Chief of Staff Higher Technical Department. After Romania entered World War II on the side of the [Axis powers](/source/Axis_powers), Cosma participated in the [Siege of Odessa](/source/Siege_of_Odessa_(1941)). He was Commanding Officer 9th Artillery Brigade in 1942, and took part in the [Battle of Stalingrad](/source/Battle_of_Stalingrad). In 1943 was Commanding Officer 13th Artillery Brigade and General Officer Commanding Artillery VII Corps. In March 1944 he was promoted to [brigadier general](/source/Brigadier_general).

On August 24, 1944, the day after [King Michael's Coup](/source/1944_Romanian_coup_d'%C3%A9tat), Cosma was taken prisoner of war by the [Red Army](/source/Red_Army) at [Târgu Neamț](/source/T%C3%A2rgu_Neam%C8%9B). Held in captivity at [Bistricioara](/source/Ceahl%C4%83u,_Neam%C8%9B), he was set free a month later, and he returned to serve as General Officer Commanding Artillery [Mountain Corps](/source/V%C3%A2n%C4%83tori_de_munte) in the struggle against [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany). In 1945, he was General Officer Commanding Artillery [4th Army](/source/Fourth_Army_(Romania)), General Officer Commanding 18th Division, General Officer Commanding 19th Division, and Commandant Artillery Instruction Center.[3]

Cosma went into reserve in August 1946, was promoted to major general in April 1947, and retired in August 1947.[3] In 1955 he was tried at the Military Tribunal in [Iași](/source/Ia%C8%99i) by the [Communist authorities](/source/Socialist_Republic_of_Romania) for his role on the [Eastern Front](/source/Eastern_Front_(World_War_I)); Cosma was found not guilty and was acquitted. He died in [Bucharest](/source/Bucharest) on July 1, 1969.[2]
