He previously held the Sir Kenneth Bailey Chair of Law at the [Melbourne Law School](/source/Melbourne_Law_School). He was born in [Fraserburgh](/source/Fraserburgh), [Aberdeenshire](/source/Aberdeenshire). 
Simpson studied law at the [University of Aberdeen](/source/University_of_Aberdeen), the [University of British Columbia](/source/University_of_British_Columbia), and the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan) in Ann Arbor, where he received his doctorate of law. He has taught at the University of British Columbia, the University of Melbourne, and the Australian National University. He has also served as a visiting professor at [Sydney Law School](/source/Sydney_Law_School) (1996) and [Harvard Law School](/source/Harvard_Law_School) (1999).
