**Germigny-l’Exempt** (French pronunciation: [\[ʒɛʁmiɲi lɛɡzɑ̃\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French)) is a [commune](/source/Communes_of_France) in the central French [department](/source/Departments_of_France) of [Cher](/source/Cher_(department)).

## Geography

A farming area comprising the village and a couple of hamlets situated by the banks of the small Luisant river some 24 miles (39 km) southeast of [Bourges](/source/Bourges) at the junction of departmental routes D100, D15, D78, D43.

## Sights

- The twelfth-century church of [Notre-Dame](/source/Notre-Dame_de_Germigny-l'Exempt), with its exceptionally tall tower-porch, was built after the siege of 1108 by [Louis VI the Fat](/source/Louis_VI_the_Fat)[3] as a symbol of the [Capetian](/source/Capetians) « [Pax Dei](/source/Peace_and_Truce_of_God) ».[4] The inconographic program of its inner portal of 1215 is inherited from the north porch of the west portal of two churches: [Laon Cathedral](/source/Laon_Cathedral) and the abbey church in [Saint-Gilles du Gard](/source/Saint-Gilles_du_Gard). The [tympanum](/source/Tympanum_(architecture)) showing a [Sedes Sapientiae](/source/Seat_of_Wisdom) is meant to celebrate the triumph of the Church (the Virgin being symbolic of the Church) upon heretics who reject the real presence in the [eucharist](/source/Eucharist).[5]
