The '''German Channel''' is an artificial [channel](/source/channel_(geography)) dug into the southwest side of [Palau](/source/Palau)'s [barrier reef](/source/barrier_reef) that connects the [lagoon](/source/lagoon) to the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean). The channel was made by the [Germans](/source/German_Empire) around the end of 1908,<ref>[https://books.google.de/books?id=z8dhCwAAQBAJ&pg=PA11&dq=Deutscher+Kanal+Palau&hl=de&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiyjPDe5aPoAhXI4KQKHQcWAbMQ6AEIKDAA#v=onepage&q=german%20channel&f=false Palau - Ein Tauch- und Reiseführer, 3. Aufl. 2016 (Seite 11)]</ref> during the time when Palau was a [German colony](/source/German_New_Guinea), to shorten the transport route from the island of Angaur, located outside the reef and where phosphate was mined, to the northeastern port of Koror. Presently, it is a popular [dive](/source/Underwater_diving) [site](/source/Recreational_dive_sites).<ref>{{cite book |last=Rock |first=Tim |year=2000 |title=Lonely Planet Palau: Diving & Snorkeling |publisher=Pisces Books |isbn=1864500190 |pages=144}}</ref><ref>{{cite book |last1=Cook |first1=Ben |last2=Marvin |first2=Lorry |last3=Lathe |first3=Chad |last4=McCrea |first4=Megan |last5=Lejkowski |first5=Christy |last6=Lejkowsk |first6=Rick |last7=Gall |first7=Michael |year=2010 |title=Micronesia and Palau |publisher=Other Places Publishing |isbn=978-0982261934 |pages=234}}</ref>
