'''Geranyl acetate''' is a [terpenoid](/source/terpenoid). It is a colorless liquid with a pleasant floral or fruity rose [aroma](/source/aroma). It is a colorless liquid but commercial samples can appear yellowish. Geranyl acetate is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. Several hundred tons are produced annually.<ref>{{cite book |doi=10.1002/0471238961.2005181602120504.a01.pub2|chapter=Terpenoids |title=Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology |year=2006 |last1=Sell |first1=Charles S. |isbn=0471238961 }}</ref>

==Occurrence and production==
Geranyl acetate is a constituent of many [essential oil](/source/essential_oil)s, including Ceylon [citronella](/source/citronella_oil), [palmarosa](/source/palmarosa), [lemon grass](/source/lemon_grass), petit grain, [neroli](/source/neroli), [geranium](/source/Pelargonium), [coriander](/source/coriander), [carrot](/source/carrot), [Camden woollybutt](/source/Eucalyptus_macarthurii), and [sassafras](/source/sassafras). It can be obtained by [fractional distillation](/source/fractional_distillation) of the essential oils obtained from these sources, but more commonly it is prepared by the [esterification](/source/esterification) of [geraniol](/source/geraniol) with [acetic acid](/source/acetic_acid).

==Uses==
Geranyl acetate is used primarily as a component of perfumes for creams and soaps and as a flavoring ingredient. It is used particularly in rose, lavender and geranium formulations where a sweet fruity or citrus aroma is desired. Its aroma is described as floral, rose, lavender, green, waxy, and herbal.<ref>{{cite web |title=geranyl acetate|url=https://scentsandflavors.com/database/9dbb5112-feb4-40d3-adc6-908475f042c3 |website=Scents and Flavors |publisher=Scents and Flavors |access-date=26 March 2026}}</ref> It is designated by the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration](/source/Food_and_Drug_Administration) as [generally recognized as safe](/source/generally_recognized_as_safe) (GRAS).
