His father was Sir Walter Grove<ref name="vch"/> and his mother was the essayist [Geraldine, Lady Grove](/source/Agnes_Geraldine_Grove).

He was educated at [Sherborne School](/source/Sherborne_School) in [Sherborne](/source/Sherborne), [Dorset](/source/Dorset). Grove joined the [British South Africa Police](/source/British_South_Africa_Police) in [Rhodesia](/source/Rhodesia) in 1911 and served during [World War I](/source/World_War_I) in the [South-West Africa Campaign](/source/South-West_Africa_Campaign) and [East African Campaign](/source/East_African_Campaign_(World_War_I)) and with the [King's African Rifles](/source/King's_African_Rifles), rising to rank of lieutenant.<ref name="obit1962">Staff report (1962). He was co-director of the 1929 film ''[A Dangerous Woman](/source/A_Dangerous_Woman_(1929_film))'' and served in technical advisory roles in ''[Tower of London](/source/Tower_of_London_(1939_film))'', ''[Christopher Strong](/source/Christopher_Strong)'', and the 1930 version of ''[Raffles](/source/Raffles_(1930_film))''.
