# Gerald Douglas

**Gerald Wybergh Douglas** (17 June 1875 – 20 December 1934) was an [Anglican](/source/Anglican) [bishop](/source/Bishop).

Douglas was born into a clerical family. His father was the Reverend W. W. Douglas, a [canon](/source/Canon_(priest)) of [Worcester Cathedral](/source/Worcester_Cathedral) and [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of [Salwarpe, Worcestershire](/source/River_Salwarpe).[1] He was educated at [Eton College](/source/Eton_College) and [King's College, Cambridge](/source/King's_College,_Cambridge).[2] He was ordained as a [deacon](/source/Deacon) in 1899[3] and as a [priest](/source/Priest) in 1900. His first position was as a [curate](/source/Curate) in [Gainsborough, Lincolnshire](/source/Gainsborough,_Lincolnshire). He was [Vice-Principal](/source/Principal_(academia)) at [Ely Theological College](/source/Ely_Theological_College) from 1900 to 1908.[4] After a further [curacy](/source/Curate) in [Lavender Hill](/source/Lavender_Hill) he became [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of Christ Church, [St Leonards-on-Sea](/source/St_Leonards-on-Sea) in 1912.[5] Eight years later he became [principal](/source/Principal_(academia)) of the Diocesan Theological College in the [Diocese of Zanzibar](/source/Anglican_Church_of_Tanzania). From 1925 to 1930 he was the [Archdeacon](/source/Archdeacon) of [Korogwe](/source/Korogwe), when he became the [Bishop of Nyasaland](/source/Diocese_of_Nyasaland) until his death in 1934.[6]
