'''State Route 255''' ('''SR 255''') is a {{convert|19.7|mi|km|adj=mid|-long}} S-shaped [state highway](/source/State_highway_(US)) located in the [North Georgia mountains](/source/North_Georgia_mountains) section of the U.S. state of [Georgia](/source/Georgia_(U.S._state)). It travels through [White](/source/White_County%2C_Georgia) and [Habersham](/source/Habersham_County%2C_Georgia) counties.

==Route description==
SR 255 begins at an [intersection](/source/intersection_(road)) with [SR 115](/source/Georgia_State_Route_115) (Clarkesville Highway) east of [Cleveland](/source/Cleveland%2C_Georgia), in White County. The route heads northeast, and crosses over [Blue Creek](/source/Blue_Creek_(Chattahoochee_River)) and travels through [Batesville](/source/Batesville%2C_Georgia). Farther to the east, it passes New Blue Creek Cemetery and intersects [SR 384](/source/Georgia_State_Route_384) (Duncan Bridge Road). It then crosses over Brasstown Creek shortly before it crosses over [Chattahoochee River](/source/Chattahoochee_River) and enters Habersham County. Just after the county line, SR 255 crosses over [Amys Creek](/source/Amys_Creek_(Chattahoochee_River)) and meets [SR 17](/source/Georgia_State_Route_17) (Unicoi Turnpike). The two highways share a [concurrency](/source/concurrency_(road)), heading in a northwestern direction. During the concurrency, SR 17/SR 255 intersect [SR 255 Alt.](/source/Georgia_State_Route_255_Alternate) (Ben T. Huiet Highway) and cross Maudlin Mill, Car, and [Chickamauga Creek](/source/Chickamauga_Creek_(Chattahoochee_River))s before they reach [Sautee Nacoochee](/source/Sautee_Nacoochee%2C_Georgia). At Maudlin Mill Creek, they cross back into White County. There, SR 255 splits to the north. Just prior to curving to the northeast, the route crosses over Ben Creek, and just after that curve, it crosses over Bean Creek and enters [Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest](/source/Chattahoochee-Oconee_National_Forest). Northeast of Bean Creek, SR 255 intersects Sky Lake Road, which leads to Sky Lake. Just after Sky Lake Road, the highway has a second crossing over Chickamauga Creek. It heads to the east, and re-enters Habersham County, at the same time exiting the [Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest](/source/Chattahoochee-Oconee_National_Forest). A short while afterward, SR 255 has a second intersection with SR 255 Alt. Just northeast of that intersection, the route re-enters the Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forest. The highway heads north-northeast to meet its northern terminus, an intersection with [SR 197](/source/Georgia_State_Route_197) in [Batesville](/source/Batesville%2C_Georgia). SR 255 travels through the historic [Sautee Valley Historic District](/source/Sautee_Valley_Historic_District).<ref name="Google"/>

No section of SR 255 is part of the [National Highway System](/source/National_Highway_System_(United_States)), a system of routes determined to be the most important for the nation's economy, mobility and defense.<ref name="NHS Georgia">{{cite map |title=National Highway System: Georgia |url=http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/nhs_maps/georgia/georgia_ga.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150921013812/http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/nhs_maps/georgia/georgia_ga.pdf |url-status=dead |archive-date=September 21, 2015 |format=PDF |publisher=[Federal Highway Administration](/source/Federal_Highway_Administration) |date=March 25, 2015 |access-date=March 5, 2017 }}</ref>

==History==
SR 255 was established in 1949 along an alignment from Sautee to Batesville.<ref name="GDOT 1948"/><ref name="GDOT 1949"/> In 1953, a section from Sautee to just inside the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest was paved.<ref name="GDOT 1952">{{Cite GDOT map |year=1952 |access-date=February 22, 2013 }}</ref><ref name="GDOT 1953">{{Cite GDOT map |year=1953 |access-date=February 22, 2013 }}</ref> By 1960, the entire route from Sautee to Batesville was paved, and the section from the current western terminus to the southern intersection with SR 17 was paved. It is unknown if the concurrency with SR 17 existed at this time.<ref name="GDOT 1957">{{Cite GDOT map |year=1957 |access-date=February 22, 2013 }}</ref><ref name="GDOT 1960">{{Cite GDOT map |year=1960 |access-date=February 22, 2013 }}</ref>

'''State Route 255 Alternate''' ('''SR 255 Alt.''') is a {{convert|3.3|mi|km|adj=mid|-long}} [alternate route](/source/alternate_route) for SR 255. Its route is shorter and more direct than the mainline, and bypasses the [Sautee Valley Historic District](/source/Sautee_Valley_Historic_District), and [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area) of Sautee. The highway is entirely within Habersham County.<ref name="Google2"/>
