The **George Rocks**, also historically known as King George's Rocks, is part of the [Waterhouse Island](/source/Waterhouse_Island_(Tasmania)) Group, a group of three adjacent uninhabited [granite](/source/Granite) [islets](/source/Islet) and associated [reefs](/source/Reef) with a combined area of 7 hectares (17 acres), situated in Banks Strait, part of [Bass Strait](/source/Bass_Strait), lying close to the north-eastern coast of [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania), Australia.[1]

Seal hunting took place early in the 19th century. [Captain James Kelly](/source/James_Kelly_(Australian_explorer)) took seals there in 1816, and Thomas Tucker is recorded sealing on the rocks in 1827. Captain Kelly applied for a lease to establish a bay [whaling](/source/Whaling) station at a small sandy beach on the west side of the largest of the rocks in 1841[2]

Other islands in the Waterhouse Group include [Ninth](/source/Ninth_Island), [Tenth](/source/Tenth_Island), [Waterhouse](/source/Waterhouse_Island_(Tasmania)), [Little Waterhouse](/source/Little_Waterhouse_Island), [Maclean](/source/Maclean_Island), [Baynes](/source/Baynes_Island), [Gygnet](/source/Cygnet_Island), [Swan](/source/Swan_Island_(Tasmania)), [Foster](/source/Foster_Islands_(Tasmania)), [Little Swan](/source/Little_Swan_Island), [St Helens](/source/St_Helens_Island) and [Paddys](/source/Paddys_Island) islands and [Bird Rock](/source/Bird_Rock_(Tasmania)) islet.[1]

## Fauna

Recorded breeding [seabird](/source/Seabird) species are [little penguin](/source/Little_penguin), [short-tailed shearwater](/source/Short-tailed_shearwater), [white-faced storm-petrel](/source/White-faced_storm-petrel), [silver gull](/source/Silver_gull), [black-faced cormorant](/source/Black-faced_cormorant) and [crested tern](/source/Crested_tern). Introduced [mammals](/source/Mammal) are rabbits and rats (it was announced in February 2021 that all the rats had been eradicated). The [metallic skink](/source/Metallic_skink) is present.[1]
