He was appointed the [Bishop](/source/Bishop_(Catholicism)) of the [Diocese of Dunkeld](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Dunkeld) by the [Holy See](/source/Holy_See) on 22 March 1878, and [consecrated](/source/Consecration) to the [Episcopate](/source/Episcopal_polity) on 26 May 1878.
