He has also served as vice president of the American Society of Political and Legal Philosophy and president of the New England Political Science Association. He has also served as a member of the editorial board or consulting editor of the ''[Journal of the History of Ideas](/source/Journal_of_the_History_of_Ideas)'', the [Library of America](/source/Library_of_America), Alternative Futures, the ''[American Political Science Review](/source/American_Political_Science_Review)'', ''[Political Theory](/source/Political_Theory_(journal))'', and ''[Raritan Quarterly Review](/source/Raritan_Quarterly_Review)''. He is a recipient of the Behrman Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Humanities from [Princeton](/source/Princeton_University). He retired from teaching in 2002.<ref name=":0" />
