Gleason made his official debut, as U.S. Virgin Islands' only swimmer, at the [2000 Summer Olympics](/source/2000_Summer_Olympics) in [Sydney](/source/Sydney). At the [2002 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m)](/source/2002_FINA_World_Swimming_Championships_(25_m)) in [Moscow](/source/Moscow), Gleason tackled an extended program of five swimming events, highlighted by a 16th-place finish in the 200 metre freestyle (1:47.69) where he challenged 8 other swimmers in heat 7, including Olympic medalist [George Bovell](/source/George_Bovell) of [Trinidad and Tobago](/source/Trinidad_and_Tobago), who out-touched Gleason by 0.03 seconds. In the summer of 2003, Gleason competed in the [Pan American Games](/source/2003_Pan_American_Games) in [Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic](/source/Santo_Domingo%2C_Dominican_Republic), where he raced to FINA Olympic B-standard entry times of 51.64 (100 m freestyle) and 57.13 (100 m backstroke).  His eighth-place effort in the 100 m backstroke marked his highest result at a major international competition.
