# George Cording

**George Ernest Cording** (1 January 1878 – 2 February 1946) was a [Welsh](/source/Welsh_people) [cricketer](/source/Cricket). Cording was a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)) who fielded as a [wicket-keeper](/source/Wicket-keeper). He was born at [Tredegar](/source/Tredegar), [Monmouthshire](/source/Monmouthshire).

Cording made his debut in [county cricket](/source/County_cricket) for [Glamorgan](/source/Glamorgan_County_Cricket_Club) against [Berkshire](/source/Berkshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the 1900 [Minor Counties Championship](/source/Minor_Counties_Championship). His appearances for Glamorgan were limited in his capacity as a full-time school teacher.[1] Before [World War I](/source/World_War_I), his teaching commitments limited his appearances in the Minor Counties Championship to just seventeen.[2] Glamorgan were afforded [first-class status](/source/First-class_cricket) for the [1921 season](/source/1921_English_cricket_season), with Cording, aged 43 at this time, keeping-wicket in Glamorgan's inaugural [County Championship](/source/County_Championship) match against [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club) at [Cardiff Arms Park](/source/Cardiff_Arms_Park).[3] Cording assisted Glamorgan for two further seasons, making eighteen further first-class appearances, the last of which came against [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_County_Cricket_Club) at [Bramall Lane, Sheffield](/source/Bramall_Lane).[3] In his nineteen first-class appearances, he scored a total of 498 runs at an [average](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) of 16.60, with a high score of 101.[4] This score, which was his only first-class [century](/source/Century_(cricket)), came against [Worcestershire](/source/Worcestershire_County_Cricket_Club) at [St Helens, Swansea](/source/St._Helen's_Rugby_and_Cricket_Ground), in 1921.[5]

After retiring from cricket, Cording continued to promote cricket in [South Wales](/source/South_Wales), helping raise war funds with friendly matches during [World War II](/source/World_War_II).[1] Cording served during the war with the [National Fire Service](/source/National_Fire_Service). He died at [Llanrumney](/source/Llanrumney), [Glamorgan](/source/Glamorgan), on 2 February 1946.
