**George Chakiris** (born September 16, 1932) is an American actor and dancer. He is best known for his appearance in the 1961 film version of *[West Side Story](/source/West_Side_Story_(1961_film))* as Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks gang, for which he won both the [Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Supporting_Actor) and the [Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture](/source/Golden_Globe_Award_for_Best_Supporting_Actor_%E2%80%93_Motion_Picture).[1]

## Life and career

### Early life

Chakiris was born on September 16, 1932, in [Norwood, Ohio](/source/Norwood%2C_Ohio), to Stelianos (Steve) and Zoe (*née* Anastasiadou) Chakiris, Greek immigrants from Turkey. He is one of eight siblings.[2][3][4]

His family moved to [Long Beach, California](/source/Long_Beach%2C_California), in 1944.[5][6] He attended Jefferson Junior High school and was graduated in 1950 from [Woodrow Wilson Classical High School](/source/Woodrow_Wilson_Classical_High_School), both in Long Beach.[7][8]

Chakiris attended one year at [Long Beach City College](/source/Long_Beach_City_College), but wanted to pursue a career in dance, so he dropped out and moved to Hollywood. He worked in the advertising department of [May Company California](/source/May_Company_California), a department store, and studied dance at night.[7][8]

### Early films

Chakiris made his film debut at age 15 in 1947 in the chorus of *[Song of Love](/source/Song_of_Love_(1947_film))*.[8]

For several years he appeared in small roles, usually as a dancer or a member of the chorus in various musical films, including *[The Great Caruso](/source/The_Great_Caruso)* (1951), *[Stars and Stripes Forever](/source/Stars_and_Stripes_Forever_(film))* (1952), *[Call Me Madam](/source/Call_Me_Madam_(film))* (1953), *[Second Chance](/source/Second_Chance_(1953_film))* (1953), and *[The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.](/source/The_5%2C000_Fingers_of_Dr._T.)* (1953). He was a dancer in [Marilyn Monroe](/source/Marilyn_Monroe)'s "[Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend](/source/Diamonds_Are_a_Girl's_Best_Friend)" number in *[Gentlemen Prefer Blondes](/source/Gentlemen_Prefer_Blondes_(1953_film))* (1953), and he appeared in *[Give a Girl a Break](/source/Give_a_Girl_a_Break)* (1953) and *[White Christmas](/source/White_Christmas_(film))* (1954).[1]

He can be seen in the wedding dance in the MGM musical film *[Brigadoon](/source/Brigadoon_(film))* (1954), and appeared in *[There's No Business Like Show Business](/source/There's_No_Business_Like_Show_Business_(film))* (1954).

Chakiris was sometimes cast in non-[Caucasian](/source/White_people) roles, including in *West Side Story* as a [Puerto Rican](/source/Puerto_Ricans) and in *Diamond Head* as a [native Hawaiian](/source/Native_Hawaiians).

### Paramount

Chakiris appeared uncredited as a dancer in *[White Christmas](/source/White_Christmas_(film))* (1954), and his big break came when he appeared in a close-up with [Rosemary Clooney](/source/Rosemary_Clooney) while she sang "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me". A publicity photo of this generated a great deal of fan mail, and [Paramount](/source/Paramount_Pictures) signed him to a movie contract. "I got lucky with the close-up with Rosemary," said Chakiris.[9][10]

Chakiris appeared in *[The Country Girl](/source/The_Country_Girl_(1954_film))* (1954) and *[The Girl Rush](/source/The_Girl_Rush)* (1955), dancing with [Rosalind Russell](/source/Rosalind_Russell) in the latter. He received a positive review from [Hedda Hopper](/source/Hedda_Hopper).[11]

MGM borrowed him for *[Meet Me in Las Vegas](/source/Meet_Me_in_Las_Vegas)* (1956), and he danced in Las Vegas.[12]

Chakiris had a small non-dancing part in *[Under Fire](/source/Under_Fire_(1957_film))* (1957).

### *West Side Story*

Chakiris in *[West Side Story](/source/West_Side_Story_(1961_film))* (1961)

About 1958, frustrated with the progress of his career, Chakiris left Hollywood for New York. The stage musical *[West Side Story](/source/West_Side_Story)* had been running for a year on [Broadway](/source/Broadway_theatre), and Chakiris auditioned for [Jerome Robbins](/source/Jerome_Robbins). He was cast in the London production as Riff, leader of the Jets. The musical launched on the [West End](/source/West_End_theatre) in late 1958, and Chakiris received excellent reviews, playing it for almost 22 months.[13]

The [Mirisch Brothers](/source/Mirisch_Brothers) bought the film rights to *West Side Story* and screen-tested Chakiris. They thought his dark complexion made him more suited to the role of Bernardo, leader of the Sharks, and cast [Russ Tamblyn](/source/Russ_Tamblyn) as Riff. Filming took seven months.[14][7]

The film adaptation of *[West Side Story](/source/West_Side_Story_(1961_film))* (1961) was hugely successful, and Chakiris won the [Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Supporting_Actor) for his performance. This led to a long-term contract with the [Mirisch Company](/source/Mirisch_Company).[15]

### After *West Side Story*

Chakiris played the lead role in *[Two and Two Make Six](/source/Two_and_Two_Make_Six)* (1962), directed by [Freddie Francis](/source/Freddie_Francis).[1] He starred as a doctor in the film *[Diamond Head](/source/Diamond_Head_(film))* (1963), opposite [Charlton Heston](/source/Charlton_Heston) and [Yvette Mimieux](/source/Yvette_Mimieux).[16]

In the early 1960s, he embarked on a career as a [pop singer](/source/Pop_singer), resulting in a couple of minor hits. In 1960, he recorded a [single](/source/Single_(music)) with producer [Joe Meek](/source/Joe_Meek). He would have two charting albums, *George-Chakiris* and *Memories Are Made of This*, they would peak at No. 28 and 45 in the [US](/source/Billboard_200) respectively.[17]

In May 1962 Chakiris's fee was reported to be $100,000 per movie.[18] His first new film for the Mirisches was *[Flight from Ashiya](/source/Flight_from_Ashiya)* (1964), shot in Japan with [Yul Brynner](/source/Yul_Brynner) and [Richard Widmark](/source/Richard_Widmark). The Mirisches reunited Chakiris with Brynner in *[Kings of the Sun](/source/Kings_of_the_Sun)* (1963), an epic about the [Mayans](/source/Maya_peoples), which was a box-office flop. Chakiris went to Italy to make *[Bebo's Girl](/source/La_ragazza_di_Bube_(film))* (1964) with [Claudia Cardinale](/source/Claudia_Cardinale). He acted in *[633 Squadron](/source/633_Squadron)* (1964), a war movie with [Cliff Robertson](/source/Cliff_Robertson), the last movie he made for the Mirisches.[1] Chakiris later said he made a mistake with his Hollywood films by looking at the "potential" of them instead of the quality of the roles.[19]

### Europe

Chakiris played a Greek terrorist in Cyprus in a British film, *[The High Bright Sun](/source/The_High_Bright_Sun)* (1965), with [Dirk Bogarde](/source/Dirk_Bogarde).[20] He went to Italy for *[The Mona Lisa Has Been Stolen](/source/The_Mona_Lisa_Has_Been_Stolen)* (1965) and France for *[Is Paris Burning?](/source/Is_Paris_Burning%3F_(film))* (1966).[21]

He appeared with [Catherine Deneuve](/source/Catherine_Deneuve) and [Gene Kelly](/source/Gene_Kelly) in [Jacques Demy](/source/Jacques_Demy)'s French musical film *[The Young Girls of Rochefort](/source/The_Young_Girls_of_Rochefort)* (1967). Around this time, his manager cancelled his contract with Capitol Records.[22] However, he enjoyed his time in Europe, saying he had time to "experiment and refine my craft."[19] He also performed a nightclub act at [Caesars Palace](/source/Caesars_Palace) in Las Vegas, his first stage work since *West Side Story*. The show was successful and led to Chakiris receiving an offer to appear with [Jose Ferrer](/source/Jose_Ferrer) in a TV production of *[Kismet](/source/Kismet_(1967_film))* (1967). He appeared in *[The Day the Hot Line Got Hot](/source/The_Day_the_Hot_Line_Got_Hot)* (1968) in France, and *[The Big Cube](/source/The_Big_Cube)* (1969) with [Lana Turner](/source/Lana_Turner) in America. He made *Sharon Vestida de Rojo* (*Sharon Dressed in Red*) (1970) in Spain.[23]

*Filmink* argued Chakiris "probably spent too much time in Europe. He definitely should have done more musicals – it’s amazing that he became famous in one but didn’t do any apart from *Rochefort*."[1]

### 1970s and 1980s

In 1969, Chakiris did a stage production of *[The Corn Is Green](/source/The_Corn_Is_Green)* in Chicago with [Eileen Herlie](/source/Eileen_Herlie). He enjoyed the experience and it revived his confidence as an actor. He said all the films he made after *West Side Story* had been "a waste of time...it was difficult to take them seriously...It was my fault and no one else's."[24]

Chakiris accepted a dramatic role on TV's *[Medical Center](/source/Medical_Center_(TV_series))* to change his image.[24]

He starred in the first national tour of the [Stephen Sondheim](/source/Stephen_Sondheim) musical *[Company](/source/Company_(musical))*, in the role of Bobby, from 1971-1972.

Chakiris worked heavily on TV in the 1970s and 1980s in Britain and the U.S., guest-starring on *[Hawaii Five-O](/source/Hawaii_Five-O_(1968_TV_series))*, *[Police Surgeon](/source/Dr._Simon_Locke)*, *[Thriller](/source/Thriller_(British_TV_series))*, *[Notorious Woman](/source/Notorious_Woman)*, *[Wonder Woman](/source/Wonder_Woman_(TV_series))*, *[Fantasy Island](/source/Fantasy_Island)*, *[CHiPs](/source/CHiPs)*, *[Matt Houston](/source/Matt_Houston)*, *[Scarecrow and Mrs. King](/source/Scarecrow_and_Mrs._King)*, *[Poor Little Rich Girls](/source/Poor_Little_Rich_Girls_(1984_TV_series))*, *[Hell Town](/source/Hell_Town_(TV_series))* and *[Murder, She Wrote](/source/Murder%2C_She_Wrote)*.

He appeared in the final episode (March 22, 1974) of *[The Partridge Family](/source/The_Partridge_Family)* as an old high school boyfriend to Shirley Partridge ([Shirley Jones](/source/Shirley_Jones)). Their kiss goodbye was the final scene in the program's run. He also starred in the [Terry Marcel](/source/Terry_Marcel) film *Why Not Stay for Breakfast?* (1979).

Chakiris appeared in several episodes of *[Dallas](/source/Dallas_(TV_series))* and had a role on *[Santa Barbara](/source/Santa_Barbara_(TV_series))*.

### Later career

Chakiris was top-billed in the [vampire film](/source/Vampire_film) *[Pale Blood](/source/Pale_Blood)* (1990). On TV, he had a recurring role on the series *[Superboy](/source/Superboy_(TV_series))* as Professor Peterson from 1988 to 1990, and guest-starred on *[Human Target](/source/Human_Target_(1992_TV_series))* and the [miniseries](/source/Miniseries) *The Girls of Lido*.

On stage, he starred in a [Long Beach](/source/Long_Beach) Civic Light Opera production of *[The King and I](/source/The_King_and_I)* in 1995.[25]

On March 23, 1998, on the [70th Academy Awards](/source/70th_Academy_Awards) telecast, he appeared in the "Oscar's Family Album" segment, a historic gathering of 70 actors who have received both competitive and [honorary awards](/source/Academy_Honorary_Award) seated onstage together.[26]

He has given occasional television interviews since then, but is mostly retired. His hobby of making sterling silver jewelry has turned into a new occupation,[27] working as a jewelry designer for his own brand, George Chakiris Collections, consisting of handmade original sterling silver jewelry.

In 2012, he presented a musical about [veganism](/source/Veganism) titled *Loving the Silent Tears*.[28][29]

In 2021, Chakiris appeared in the film *[Not to Forget](/source/Not_to_Forget)* (2021), which aims to raise awareness and funds for the fight against [Alzheimer's disease](/source/Alzheimer's_disease). The movie, directed by Valerio Zanoli, stars [Karen Grassle](/source/Karen_Grassle) and five [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Award) winners: George Chakiris, [Cloris Leachman](/source/Cloris_Leachman), [Louis Gossett Jr.](/source/Louis_Gossett_Jr.), [Tatum O'Neal](/source/Tatum_O'Neal), and [Olympia Dukakis](/source/Olympia_Dukakis).
