# George August

**George Lawrence Bagley August** (16 September 1917 – 13 October 1991) was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket). August was a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)). He was born in [Mymensingh](/source/Mymensingh), then in the [British Raj](/source/British_Raj) and was educated at [Bedford School](/source/Bedford_School) in England, where he played for the school cricket team.[1]

August made his debut for [Bedfordshire](/source/Bedfordshire_County_Cricket_Club) against [Cambridgeshire](/source/Cambridgeshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the 1935 [Minor Counties Championship](/source/Minor_Counties_Championship), playing for the county until 1939. When [World War II](/source/World_War_II) ended [county cricket](/source/County_cricket), he went on to serve in the war. He left the [Officers' Training Corps](/source/Officers'_Training_Corps) with the rank of [2nd Lieutenant](/source/2nd_Lieutenant) in November 1940,[2] with the [Royal Artillery](/source/Royal_Artillery).

Following the war, he continued to play [Minor counties](/source/Minor_counties_of_English_and_Welsh_cricket) cricket for Bedfordshire from 1946 to 1960, making a total of 92 Minor Counties Championship appearances.[3] With [Brian Disbury](/source/Brian_Disbury_(cricketer)) he set the county's record for the first-wicket twice in six days in 1947, scoring 235 against Cambridgeshire and then 246 against [Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire_County_Cricket_Club).[4]

He made his [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) debut for the [Minor Counties](/source/Minor_Counties_cricket_team) against the [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club) in the 1950. In this match, he scored 27 runs in the Minor Counties first-innings before being dismissed by [Fred Titmus](/source/Fred_Titmus), while in their second-innings he was dismissed by [Victor Ransom](/source/Victor_Ransom) for 11 runs.[5] He made a further first-class appearance for the team in 1953 against the touring [Australians](/source/Australia_national_cricket_team).[6] He scored 3 runs in the Minor Counties first-innings, before being dismissed by [Bill Johnston](/source/Bill_Johnston_(cricketer)), while in the second-innings he was [run out](/source/Run_out) for a [duck](/source/Duck_(cricket)).[7]

In later life, August worked as a secretary at J. Gent & Son Limited,[8] by October 1967 he was the chairman of the company, which was by then in the process of being wound up.[9] He also served as secretary of Bedfordshire County Cricket Club from 1969 to 1984 and as chairman of the Minor Counties Cricket Association from 1982 until 1989.[10] He died at [Bedford](/source/Bedford) in [Bedfordshire](/source/Bedfordshire) in October 1991. His son, [Philip](/source/Philip_August), also played Minor counties cricket for Bedfordshire.
