# George Arkwright

English politician (1807–1856)

**George Arkwright** (20 August 1807 – 5 February 1856) was an English [Conservative Party](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) politician. He was a [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) (MP) for [Leominster](/source/Leominster_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) from 1842 until his death in 1856.[1]

Arkwright was born in [Bakewell](/source/Bakewell%2C_Derbyshire), Derbyshire, the great-grandson of Sir [Richard Arkwright](/source/Richard_Arkwright). He was educated at [Eton](/source/Eton_College) and [Trinity College](/source/Trinity_College%2C_Cambridge), Cambridge, receiving his B.A. in 1830 and his M.A. in 1833.[2] He was called to the bar from [Lincoln's Inn](/source/Lincoln's_Inn) in 1833. At the [1837 general election](/source/1837_United_Kingdom_general_election) Arkwright stood unsuccessfully for a seat in Parliament from [Northern Derbyshire](/source/North_Derbyshire_(UK_Parliament_constituency)),[3] but he was elected unopposed in Leominster at a [by-election](/source/By-election) in February 1842.[1] He died aged 48 in [Piccadilly](/source/Piccadilly).
