He learned new skills in prison and converted to Christianity.<ref name="cinprofile2018"/>

He was selected as [Cook Islands Party](/source/Cook_Islands_Party) candidate for [Tupapa–Maraerenga](/source/Tupapa%E2%80%93Maraerenga) in a public runoff,<ref name=cin9Apr/> and subsequently won the seat in the [2010 election](/source/2010_Cook_Islands_general_election).
